There are two books you might like to try and get since looking at the information in them can sometimes be easier that reading a thousand websites.

Choosing a School for your Child - NSW

www.schoolchoice.com.au (may be able to post it to you)

this lists all high schools in sydney, outer sydney and others.

2007 Guide to Schools - should be about the 13th edition by now as I have 2005 and it is 11th.

email : guidetoschools@ozemail.com.au for information or ring 61 2 9880 2352

The books are available at large newsagents or if you can get someone to send. Most relocation agents should now them.

Comprehensive listing of NSW secondary schools.

The schools will be of the following sorts

1. Public Schools - co ed, all girls, all boys

You will often need to live in the district for the better ones (Epping boys springs to mind)

2. Private Schools - Fee paying - about the same as island school but better facilites, although sometimes long waiting lists.

3. Selective Schools - Public schools with an entrance test and amazing examination results. Hard to get into but worth enquiring if you have a young academic.

4. Church Schools - private schools that don't have quite the high fees of the very presitgious private shools which are also often religious.

All the schools will differ between girls, boys, co ed and boarding options.

Good luck. I lived in Epping and went to the James Ruse school mentioned so I now the area but things change rapidly in schools so best to view them and make a choice that suits your sons individual needs.

Nearly all the schools will sit the HSC (Higher School Certificate) at 18 which is an exam unique to NSW. If you are planning on moving around or sending him to University not in NSW then perhaps a school that is offering IB will be the most important. There are several but not sure about that area.

Many children in Sydney travel large distance across town on public transport to get to their chosen schools, there are not the private school buses like HK and taxis are not an option. So consider how he will get there and back.
