Where to meet people?

Hi there

I have been living in HK for about 5 weeks now. Am getting a little bit bored as I am not working and don't have any friends here. Have taken up language lessons (private though) and yoga but both activities aren't very social avenues for meeting people.


Can anyone suggest the best way to meet people in HK?

Hi madxpat,


Join one (or two) of the Expat organisations, i.e., The Australian Association or The American Women's Association. I met great people in those groups at each of their weekly coffee mornings.


Also joined the YWCA English Speaking Members Dept. and attended their 'At Home' programme.


You can get more information from the respective websites. Many events run during the week as well as on weekends.

I did the At Home course through the YWCA back in year 2000 and have never looked back. I made so many friends through that course and others which led onto other friendships. They also do some other great courses besides the At Home.

Also through the American Womens Assocation - go to CHAT (come and have a talk) held at the JW Marriott Hotel on every Thurs at 10am-12noon in the coffee lounge - the staff will direct you.

Excellent - thanks for all the information. I will definitely try some of those suggestions. Initially arriving in HK I was happy to explore on my own but now I need to meet people! thanks once again.

Any rules to join the American Womens Association? I'm not native American but have studied there for 6 years and would love to meet western female friends.

Anyone can join AWA, YWCA or Australian Association. No need to be of that nationality.
