Learning disability

I am enquiring for a close friend. She suspects her 10 year old daughter has a learning disability/ADHD. I know as a fact that all ADHD assessments and treatments are very expensive and my friend simply cannot afford this cost. Could anyone recommend any good doctors, therapists or solutions? Thanks.

An alternative is to go to IMI in central and buy vitamin supplements for adhd an see if it works. It's at 17 Stanley St in Central, but they suggest that you to see someone there. We went to Dr. Arlene Yik, but it costs about $900, but you will leave with herbal supplements which will help if your child is willing to take them!

Several of my friends go to Integrate hk in central HK, they have some great Occupational Therapists and have seen good changes in their children, their therapists are also great with parents, call Sharon on 25222690.

There is always the public route too:

Get a referral from any GP. Notice though that many of them are not knowledgeable about learning disabilities or ADHD (the GP giving the referral said that my kid cannot have ADD at least, because he sits so quietly at the consultation - before the specialist team considered him a clear case of ADD, plus other diagnosis). Contact your area's Child Assessment Center with the referral. They have a team of specialists to assess the situation, for example regarding the possibility of ADHD, and may refer the child to other medical doctors in public hospital too. The queue is of course long.

It is useful to ask teachers to write a letter about the daughter's situation, take old report cards, drawings etc with you for the appointment.

As far as for learning problems, your friend should ask the school who is their contact person to Education Department for such issues. Usually it would be the social worker. She should request for testing for her daughter. Learning problems are assessed by Education Dept psychologist, who may recommend steps for the school to take to help the situation (extra time for examinations, special tuition etc). School would get a grant to cover the related costs.

"Auditory Processing" is often mistaken for ADDH and can affect the learning experience further when school gets more demanding. It is recommended to have an auditory test with an specialized audiologyst to identify its presence.
