Crying During Bowel Movements

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by alvineki 19 yrs ago
Recently, my 10-month old baby cries every time during bowel movements. There is a small lump (like hemorrhoids) outside the anal opening.

Can babies have hemorrhoids?

Other than eating high fiber foods, what else can be done?

What can be done to ease her pain during a bowel movement?

Any cause of concern?

Thanks for the fast replies as I do not want her to develop a fear of having a bowel movement.

If your kid has a lump outside his anal opening, take him to the doctor. It's probably nothing but you need to be safe. by the way, hemorrhoids are usually on the inside of the anal opening and then pop out side because they are swollen. If it's a bump on the outside, it's probably something else. Have it checked out. By the way, it's normal for babies to cry when they poo. They are uncorfortable and trying to push it out!

It is normal for some babies to cry when they poo but make sure they are not constipated and it is not little balls. If they are constipated make sure they have lots of water and eat lots of fibre which you are already doing. Prunes are great for constipation since they actually soften the stool(learnt this during pregnancy!) and they are sweet so most kids eat them. They can be cut up and hidden in things or you could use prune juice. I would also take them to a doctor to make sure everything is okay.

Some babies cry and make a fuss when passing stool. Stool should be soft like clay or peanut butter, if so then that is normal. It is best to have your baby seen by her doctor to do a physical assessment.

As above, but also increase her fluids...is she breastfeeding? It could be caused by a new food in her diet too. More exercise might get things moving along better too.

when mine started solid his stools became hard and he did cry the first few times. But I guess after a few days, he got used to the 'sensation' of giving solid poo and no more cries.

I second the idea of prunes and also getting a doctor exam for the lump/

And try a little vaseline on and around the anus to reduce irritation if the area is not already inflamed.
