I like anything by Ian Banks. Note that he writes under two names - Ian Banks is straight fiction and Ian M Banks is sci-fi (also very good).

Just read Gweilo by Martin Booth- great book!

Marley and Me will make you laugh and cry - fantastic book if you are a dog lover.
Minette Walters is my favourite crime writer.
Cathy Kelly writes good chicks books that aren't completely brainless.
Jodi Piccoult writes quite well, always with a legal spin and a bit of a twist at the end.
If you want a very easy read then The House by Danielle Steele is a step up for her and quite a nice story.
I enjoyed Memory Keepers Daughter and now will be looking for The Secret on your recommendation.
