If you are talking about governement schools, they are free because of the 9 year compulsory education here. For direct subsidiased schools, the range is from HK$2500 to over HK$6000 or more. But I wonder how expat children cope with the written and spoken chinese if they havent learnt anything at kindergarten stage.

I think you should think very carefully about it. I think they would sink without trace without a Cantonese speaking parent unless you can get them into one of the very few English medium primary schools. Also the pedagogy is years behind International and ESF schools.

Speaking from personal experience, as an Overseas Chinese I did not speak any English until I started school in the U.K. at 5yrs old. No problem! Obviously, it will take time to settle in and pick up the language but if you're immersed in it all day, with children being the quick learners they are, they will be reading & writing the 2nd language in no time.

For an English speaking child, the local English medium schools such as St Joseph's, Marymount, St Paul's Convent etc may be the best option. Since these are English Medium schools, but realistically 50% taught in Cantonese, they are highly sought after by the local population. Regardless, expats and other non-Chinese will still have a chance at an allocation and some may enter on interview. A list of such schools are on the emb's website. Kid's who attend will become bi-lingual, but it would be easier to attend Chinese kindergarten prior to primary. There is an assumption that P1 students know their basic characters, just like P1 English students already know ABC's.
