Newspapers have ads for companies wanting persons to act as air couriers, presumably turnarounds on documents or small parcels. Has anyone done this and could briefly spell out the pros and cons?

How long ago? (If the rules have changed.) Could you stay as long as you liked? Would the cheaper courier ticket price compete with today's discount airlines?
