Hi,

Well I will arriving into HK on Monday, 1st October.....brand new and would love some advice, help anything really

I’m from New Zealand and I’m moving to Hong Kong for my husbands work he is Swedish.

We will be living in The Zenith!

So please tell where I can get my hair cut and coloured….. I have long straight thin blonde hair and will want a cut/style and a full head of foils. I would love to find a modern hair salon with great products. I have never really been to any other salons even in New Zealand other than 1, he was so amazing I have never had to change…..I’m nervous about trying 1 in HK…. But I will have to be done and hopefully with your experience, guidance and advice.

Brazilin waxing and eye brow treading, where to go? And how much will I be looking at?

Bars and restaurants….. We are a young fun modern couple and love to have a good time and socialize with a glass of wine (well that’s me) …..I’m very social in NZ and love catching up with friends and don’t know anyone in HK yet!! My husband will be working a lot so I hope I can build a network of friends.

Real good strong coffee??? In New Zealand we are known for our cafes and brunches with great coffee.

Your assistance and help will be much appreciated.

Cheer,

Erin

Hi Erin, there are recommendations on all those things on the forum - just search for "hairdressers", "coffee", etc. There are tons of kiwis in HK (my husband is one of them) you will be absolutelly fine! There are some good hairdressers (Philip George is great for example). Some very good restaurants (tho pricey for the very good ones) and get ready for a wee shock on wine prices - compared to NZ - for example the normal Marlborough Sav is around NZ$30... But otherwise really fun place to be in and you will find friends no problem.

Good luck!

sorry only reason i was asking is that I always thought, if we had not had kids, and were young couple like yourselves I would have been in Mid-Levels in a flash! so much happening - restaurants and bars righ at your doorstep! But Wan Chai is central too of course - so you will have tons of fun!

hey Erin! WELCOME TO HONKERS LIFE! Wan Chai is a great area and lots of new developments, bars, restaurants there. Close to the Happy Valley horse races and Causeway Bay!!! Only a hop skip and jump to Central on the tram, mtr, bus or taxi. Most people who go out will end up in Wan Chai anyway plus is has Ladies Night every Wednesday with Free Drinks!!! ... Mid-levels has a more high rise residential feel particularly the West.

Feel free to pm me when you arrive as I would be happy to invite you out with my gal pals... as I (and probably many many other girls) know what it's like when you first arrive and aren't working and have no social circles any longer! But don't despair, you sound outgoing and friendly and will have no trouble making many friends!

Just a few recommendations:

WAXING: Nude waxing on Lyndhurst Tce, Central- Joey about $450 Braz.

HAIR: Colour Bar, Central - Ian

BARS: Mes Amis (Wan Chai), several trendy Wyndham Street Bars (Central), Lan Kwai Fong (Central)... there is a gazillion of them so I'm sure you'll find your niche!

COFFEE: Eat Right Cafe - just up from Hollywood Rd on the esculator, ask for it strong and they will deliver!

BRUNCH: Cru on Staunton St - Central/Soho, Brunch Club on Peel St - Central/Soho, The Flying Pan - Wanchai

... seek and you shall find!

Good luck with the move

Hi Erin

I am a kiwi too so all the best for your arrival to HK when you get here. I second all of the above especially the recommendation for the NZ shop and for Cru for an NZ style brunch menu. Also good is Soho Soho at the Fringe for brunch which is on the corner of Wyndham and Icehouse St in Central. Have yet to find a good coffee shop with coffee as good as Atomic in Ponsonby Rd but am still looking.

There are some great things about HK but you have to be prepared for it to be REALLY different from NZ. Lots of great restaurants, fantastic dim sum (Dragon-i on Hollywood/Wyndham is my fave), knowing that you can go out on a Monday night and it will still be buzzing, pretty good temperature (most of the time - except summer months) and close to amazing holiday destinations within 3 hours of HK.

One downside - if you like the clothes from stores like Max and Cue - buy heaps as the selection is not that great here in the mid price range. Also if you have size 40 or bigger feet, buy heaps of shoes before you come. Also eat loads of fish and chips - that is what my NZ hubby misses the most!

Agree with the recommendation for Lorraine or Pauline at The Firm. They both do great hair and Pauline does great colour.

There is heaps to do in HK, loads of sports (netball, tennis, rugby union, not to mention sports shown on TV). I have been here 9 mnths and have enjoyed it, but occassionally get angry at people walking in front and into me on the very busy streets and public transport. That has taken some getting used to.

We don't go out so much in Wanchai as we love the great restaurants and bars around Wyndham and SoHo.

Enjoy!!
