I am concerned about my 6 week old son who regularly strains & flails & grunts to pass wind most often occuring after breastfeeding between (12midnight-6am). This goes on for quite some time. It hurts me to see him like that. He dosen't cry though. This has been going on for 2 weeks now often at the same time.
I am giving him formula Hippo organic (day/early eve) and breastfeeding him between midnight and 6am. I don't produce enough milk.
So far I have received all kinds of advice but I am confused as to what's wrong with him.
I am watching my diet and cutting out certain foods. Should I consider changing the formula?

Check wtih your doctor, but it is might be due to the formula.
I know it's very difficult issue with milk supply (i've been there believe me), but the best advice a friend gave me regarding supply was to just feed feed and feed and not give baby the bottle unless absoultely necessary (as in you're totally exhausted, baby cries because he's not getting an ymilk etc). This means that for a couple of weeks you might be putting baby to breast as often as twice in an hour.
Rest as much as you can, drink fish soup, lots of fluids and eat some soaked fenugreek seeds to increase supply.

The more you bf, the more milk you will have.
Have a look under www.kellymom.com about how best to increase your milk. Within a week, you ought to be producing all your baby needs. Make sure you increase your fluids as well.
For the gas, drink tea made of fennel seeds and the carminative effect will pass into the milk as well as help your milk supply.
Good luck, dear...you may wish to attend a la Leche League Meeting to get some more support and info.

Many babies exhibit this behavior when passing wind or stool. It is normal and does not require any action.
