Any idea how to improve my bb's weight? She's now only 7.5kg at 9 months, is this a worrying weight?

what does her doctor think? is she healthy and active?

My son was 3.6kgs at birth. He's just over 12 months now and is only 8.2kgs. I told the pediatrician that he loves eating so don't understand why he's not putting on more weight. My pediatrician turned to my son and said 'you are so lucky, you can eat all your want and not have to watch you weight'. ;)
It's always been a concern of mine and I think in the beginning, the pediatrician was a little worried as well, but so far, my baby has been developing normally, has been growing in length and has lots of energy, so I've finally now stopped worrying too much about it.

Hey bontheka, feel much relieved now of what u told. I haven't brought bb to my paeditrician yet after her 6th mth immunization. She is still as active as you said, energitic and can eat well. Just not sure why her body don't seem absorb the nutrients she took. Just that occasionally she only took <5 oz of milk per meal.
She used to sleep all through the night w/o waking up, but 3 weeks ago, she started to wake up abt 2 times at night and drank only 3ozs of milk. Any idea why?
Do u all think i shld seek paeditrician advice ?

Hi SheilBB, my baby is 10 months old and the last time I brought him to the pedia, he's like haven't been gaining weight for 3 months. But he's active and energetic and keep meeting his milestones so I'm not too concerned. I was told that babies gain weight at a much slower rate after 6 months.
Night waking - my baby has been wakeful too the last couple weeks. Prob due to teething. Or maybe too active and too much stimulation during the day could cause night wakings too.

My friend's baby is one year old and lighter than my 8 mth old. She is seeing a good pediatrician who did tons of bloodwork, tests, etc. There is nothing wrong with him. But he will only drink formula and eat egg custard from the jars! The doctor says not to worry yet- he's just a very active baby who is also very distracted and can't be bothered eating. The doctor and my friends are expecting him to grow out of it. Until then, the ped said to switch him back to Stage 1 formula as it is fattier than Stage 2 (6mths + milk) and to feed him any food he wants just to get food in him!

Yeah right Nicher, my bb just developed her 4 front teeth, perhaps this causing her waking up at night !
Kilwinning, my bb is quite an active one, though at 9 mths now, still can't crawl yet (which is one of my worries, : ( she likes to jump and hop with my support. Guess i shld seek pedi advice as i have not been tracking her length for quite some time
Anyone can help 'pacify' me, anything i can do to let my child crawl?

also - she might be going through a growth period?

There was something in the news within the last couple of days regarding babies weights. Apparently a lot of parents of 'normal-sized' babies are getting worried that their babies are too small, because they are comparing them with the increasing number of overweight/obese babies around. Obesity is starting young these days!

Hi SheilBB, some babies are just late crawlers. Do encourage her by putting something attractive in front of her. Motivate her to reach and get it. Then put it farther and farther away to have her move her body in order to reach it. And don't always place her inside a playpen. They need some more space to practise the crawling.
Is she pulling up/ walking when hold on to furnitures?

My son is 21 months old and only 9 kgs, hasn't gained any for 9 months or so. We've had many tests done and we are sure he's fine. He's also very active and burns off anything he eats. If we compare him to "average" babies now he's small, but compared to 20-30 years ago he's just below average. You also need to consider the parent's build and ethnicity. My husband is Chinese and quite thin, so the Dr isn't surpried our son is thin too. Also, girls are generally smaller anyway.
As for night waking, my son wakes up more if he didn't eat enough. At 9 months your baby is probably getting more active and needs to eat more often.
To help with crawling, make sure baby has enough "tummy time" to build the arm muscles. Also helps to use a ball about the size of a soccer or volleyball to sit her on to build balance and coordination.

Nicher, had tried to 'lure' her with toys, perhaps am not persistent enough. I seldom put her in the playpen but on a playmat, good enough for her to crawl. One thing, she really likes to stand by holding to my hands / furniture, likes to pull up too. Just don't understand why she doesn't crawl.
Mommy sara, one thing u're probably right, bb grandfather is short, gosh, guess i have to accept the fact.
Tried to feed bb with more night meals, tried to wake up middle of the night to follow the 4 hour meal gap to feed her too, but she merely took 3oz. During daytime, she used to finish 6oz but just don't know why, recently, down to 4 oz. Sigh...
I'll try more tummy time, thanks for all your great advice!

My son too was waking up at nights around the 9-10 month stage. Having compared notes with other mummies, it appears that this is perfectly normal. It's frustrating of course, but it's a just a passing phase. Teething could of course be one of the problems as well. So, don't worry. At 13 months old, my second boy has just started to pull himself up. My older boy did that much earlier although he didn't actually stand by himself and start walking till he was almost 15 mths old. So, pediatrician said, the second one will probably be slow as well in doing those things. He said it's probably in the genes.

i've posted before on worries on my baby's weight too. He's a small baby - at 6 months he was 7.4k - now at 7m i don't know if he weighs more or less. When i'm at home with him, i see him playing, laughing, eating well and tranquil and happy and i feel reassured. Then i go out and see all these ginormous babies and i start wondering if i'mfeeding him the right stuff, he's not gaining weight etc...
but i'm learning to tell myself that though it's normal to worry, it's important to remember that babies are not going to stay babies 4 the rest of their lives (weighing around 7kg, toothless, learning to crawl, sit up etc)...
I know it's hard not to compare babies, with those of neighbours, friends, relatives etc, but by doing so i think we just give ourselves more reaon to worry, and it gets you nowhere.

girls,
please don't worry too much about your babies' weight. if they are happy, eating well and seem to have no obvious problems taking food in, then take it as a blessing!
my son is 22 months old and has severe reflux still. he's had to change medications again recently as the old one seemed to stop working. he doesn't eat a thing....and survives on bread and chips, milk, yogurt and sweet tofu. he will not touch pasta or any other food as he associates much of that with his sore tummy. prior to switching meds he would just projectile vomit for no apparent reason, bringing up everything that was left in his stomach, and if he gets worked up whilst crying, he would throw up all his food too. he now weighs 10.4kgs but it is a long hard slog to get his weight up. i find feeding him the worst experience of my life and if he actually ate a proper meal then i would be over the moon!
besides the feeding issue though, he's a lively happy chappy and never ever stops running around.
so please think yourselves lucky that you have healthy active babies that eat well. to be honest, in this day and age, there's more worry about obese babies - the WHO have just recently redrawn all the weight/age charts for babies to take into account that the old ones were based on formula babies and breastfed babies tend to be lighter anyway.
and remember, every baby is different!

sheilBB: some babies go from sitting to walking - they simply skip the crawling stage....
Please support our advertisers:
yep - mine never really crawled, just shuffled on their bums...
Please support our advertisers:
Hey thanks all, with all your stories, guess i'm giving myself too much worries! Appreciate these!

Bum shuffling...we called that scooting. So funny! But it's a great way to get around for a cautious little one. They often go straight to running after that.
Please support our advertisers:
Ruth, I hope so! they are 14.5 months and I just really want them to start walking - I know it is even more difficult to look after them once they do - but still...

Growth generally follows along a percentile curve throughout infancy. This rate of growth is plotted on a graph in your baby's book when weighted. Concerns may arise if growth deviates from predicted patterns.
If concerned or needing further explanation, drop in to a well baby clinic for assessment.

SheilBB and all those other Mums who think their bubbas are underweight - PLEASE DO NOT WORRY!!!!
As long as they are healthy, doing things other bubbas their age are, or there abouts, then they're fine.
It's funny looking back i used to worry myself sick about bubba 2 as she was a lot lighter than big sis, neither we're huge, however she is now 5, slender (not skinny hate that word) and weighs in at a whopping 14kgs (said sarcastically), has a mean 6 pack tummy (i kid you not) and has a waist that fits 1-1.5 years clothing.
She is the life and soul of the party, cheeky, adventourous and extremely loving and smart, so please don't worry you may find that, like mine, yours just has a very high metabolism rate and is just naturally light.
Enjoy the time inseatd of worrying, it goes so quick!
