Can one change visa status at Immigration in Wanchai? Or do you have to leave and re-enter HK?

My friend entered on a tourist visa but his work visa has now arrived... Can he simply visit Immigration in Wanchai to change it over? Or does he have to go to Macau or Shenzen and re-enter HK?

He needs to go to Macau/Shenzen to get the visa stamped. You could call Immigration and find out if they have changed the rules in the recent past. They are extremely courteous and well-informed over the phone but be prepared to be on hold for at least 10-15 mins to get through to the officer.
