I have a wireless router but it has to be in the living room as it is connected to the modem which our Now TV shares.
Unfortunately because of the thick walls my laptop does not get the signal in the study. I bought PCI 11n USB Adaptor but I am having difficulties with it:
- I keep getting "Power Surge on Hub Port. Adaptor has exceeded the power limites of its hub port" message and also
- Whenever I am turning on my computer, it reinstalls Intel Wireless Adaptor which means my USB port does not work anymore
I have been dealing with internet problems for 2.5 months now. I thought USB Adaptor would solve it but feeling very frustrated now. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks so much for being so helpful. I am much better now compared to time I wrote the inital message thanks to the tips you gave. Here is where I am now:
- The built in wireless is no longer interfering - stopped it from msconfig
- I tried the computer in various locations. Study still has weak connection but I am able to surf the net fine (it is 39 Mpbs speed- signal strength shows very low)
- The next door room (to the wireless router) is better even with 78 Mpbs. I think i will relocate my study there istead of cables running around the flat.

I have Trend Micro Scan on my computer and the usual Windows Firewall. Are those enough?
I am afraid to download too many things as they sometimes mess up other programs.
By the way, my wireless connection is encrypted. I have to enter 10 digit passcode everytime I connect. Does that mean there won't be any intruders?
What are the absolute musts that I need to download from the list above?
