Can anyone advise the various ways of getting to Guangzhou? I understand that flights go from HK, but is it possible to go via train?
If so, what are the details, time it takes and cost?

You can take a train from Hung Hom station in Kowloon to the Guangzhou East Railway Station for HK$190 each way. Trains leave at various times of the day, and it takes about 2 hours including going through immigration. You can see the schedule at http://www.kcrc.com/html/eng/index.asp
Another option is to take the KCR to Lo Wu, walk across the border, and then take a highspeed train from Shenzhen to GZ East Railway Station. That saves around HK$90 (I think), but depending on the time of day/week, it could take longer.
There is a bus, but it costs over HK$200, plus the train is better. Depending on where in Guangzhou you are going, there are also a few ferries. The cost is comparable to taking the train.
Unless we are going to or from Shunde (in which case we take a ferry), we usually take the train. It is very easy and straightforward. You can almost always walk up to counter to get your ticket right before you board the train.

I have to correct the first poster's mention of BUSES: You can get a one-way ticket to Guangzhou for HK$100. In fact, most intercity buses cost you 100 or 80 one-way.
Some leave from the Wanchai Pier on HK Island, others stop outside the CTS office on Hennessy Rd., Wanchai.
As for trains, the first post was pretty accurate.
