Dear Moms & Dads,

I'm going to travel w/ my 1 yr old to London in Nov. We are planning to stay there for 14 days. This is my 1st trip w/ him. Don't know whether i can handle. On the plane how do u keep your child settle down? If he drink formula, how can i sterilise the bottle when i am in London? Any suggestions for me to do during 14 days trip to UK?

Pls advice. thousand thanks

many, many threads on long haul trips like this.

for the flight itself, i can't advise anymore with all the new security measures. the last time i travelled, my son was about 5 months and we flew to heathrow. flying from singapore to london was ok, i just brought all my own formula and bottles (filled with some cooled boiled water and topped up with water from my thermos just before feeding). but departing heathrow was tricky, my husband had to taste some of the milk powder and water to get clearance from the customs officer. so do call your airline and also check the Hk airport website on what's allowed and what's not.

as for entertainment, i must say that if it's a night flight, i hope he will sleep well - if he has a favourite blanket or soft toy for sleeping, make sure you have it with you! and when he awakes, make sure you have lots of his favourite toys and books. during take-off and landing, have something for him to drink/suck on to minimise pressure on the ears.

as for being in london itself, where will you be staying? if you have access to microwave oven, you can buy a brand of sterilising bags called lindam from mothercare (at least that's where i got mine in singapore). once you wash the bottles, you can put the parts in the bag with water and sterilise in the microwave. one bag can be used many times and can take about 1 big avent bottle each time. alternatively you buy sterilising tablets.

i wouldn't worry too much about being in london itself if you are familiar with the city. lots of supermarkets like tescos, sainsbury will have nappies/wipes available and shops like mothercare for baby essentials.

enjoy your trip!

for sterilising - if u really want to there are some pills that you dissolve in water and then you soak cleaned bottles teats etc.

they are called miltons (i think) and available from bumbs to babes.

important to be prepared for eventualities and be relaxed. babies sense a tense mum.
