When to drop 3pm milk feed?

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all, my baby 10.5 months old. His feeding routine is as below:

7:30 wake up and milk (breastfeed)

8:30 breakfast

12 lunch

3 milk (bottlefeed)

6 dinner

7:30 milk (breastfeed)

8 sleep

For the only bottlefeed (expressed BM) of the day at 3pm, he is taking less and less to sometimes as little as 2oz. He doesn't seem fussy before dinner though. Is it a sign that he can drop that feed? Or should I replace this milk feed with food instead? If so, what food should i introduce at this tea time?

Nicher, for what it is worth - ours are 15 mnths old and I am still doing the 2.30 - 3 pm milk - this is where I introduced the real milk instead of formula, they also have a snack after it - a piece of fruit or rice buiscuit and the go till dinner at 5.30.. hope this helps..

i think we dropped the feed around this time because my son was taking so little. i replaced it with some fruit and yoghurt instead.

Nicher, you can drop the milk bottle in the afternoon and replace it with a yogurt or fruit compote. When my little girl was 10 months old, she only had a bottle in the morning and one in the evening. If your baby only takes a little milk, maybe he's telling you that he's ready for something else.

Thanks a lot of your reply! I'm concerned about his milk intake. Maybe he is ready to move on to snack then. May I ask how big a portion of yogurt and fruit would you offer at this time?

Side track a bit - I am planning to do BF just morning and bed time. Other times will gradually switch to cow's milk. I tried offering baby cow's milk mixed with his usual cereal and fruit for breakfast, but he wouldn't take it. He spit it out. Maybe coz of the different taste??! Anyone got similar experience?

Nicher, I dont think babies like it straigh away (well at least not any babies I know) as with everything - you just have to keep at it! Also, not sure, I though that cows milk was not recommended until 12 months?

Hi lsllvn - I thought cow's milk is not recommended for direct drinking till 12 months, but maybe ok to add little bit to the food? Any advice?

am sure it is ok, think you are right - as long as it is not replacing b/milk or formula I guess!

if i understand from all my baby weaning books, you can use cow's milk in cooking if baby's not allergic after 6 months but only as a drink after 1 year.

we switched to cow's milk when my baby was about 1. we did it by adding some to his usual formula and gradually increasing its proportion. for making up breakfast cereals, i used formula until he was one but started making cheese sauces with milk before that.

as for the amount to give your baby during snack, it's really up to individual kids but ensure that it's not so much that it affects his appetite for dinner and bedtime milk, which is still very important.

Hi Wheelymate,

Just want to know which cow's milk you started for your baby after 12 months? Is it fresh milk or milk powder? If it is milk powder which brand is it?

My bub is already 15 months and still feeding formula.

Thanks.

Hi Nicher

I started with 1 yogort and she ate it all from the beginning. For the fruit compote, just 1 fruit with a bit of water and sugar. If your baby is hungry he'll eat it all otherwise just give him what he needs. As for the milk intake, I also used to be concerned about how much milk my little girl used to drink. When she turned one she used to have only 1 bottle a day and her pediatrician told me to try to give her flavored milk. I started giving her fresh cow milk mixed with nesquick when she was 12 months old and eventhough she didn't drink much at the beginning, she now drinks a lot of it. If you're scared your baby doesn't get enough milk, give him other sources of calcium like cheese or porridge or fruit (mango, kiwi are excellent!). Don't go too much by the book. Babies know how to regulate themselves, just like us :)

Thanks rm for your suggestion. I also agree that babies should know what they need more than we do :)

For yogurt, do you offer flavoured yogurt or the plain Greek yogurt at first?

Hi Nicher,

I would think twice about adding sugar to a compte you might make. This is the perfect time to introduce real/natural flavours to your child and not ones masked with sugar. Your child's health and teeth will benefit in the long run.

I am very surprised to hear of a Paediatrician recommending the introduction of flavoured milk. Now is the time to start to teach the future generation about healthy eating.

I am with Chwaer, there is plenty of time in the kids life to have sugar (and flavoured milk!) - I would not go down that route now.. You want them to accept all kinds of natural flavours and keep them away from sugar as long as you can..

Thanks all. I would never consider adding sugar to the milk!

Nicher... Whatever yogurt you want to give to your baby is fine. If he doesn't like it, he won't eat it. And why not give a bit of sugar from time to time? Or a cookie? I don't see anything wrong in giving little sweets to babies...

Even if he is only taking a small amount of EBM at 3pm it would be a good idea to still keep offering it to him .

Babies use breast milk not only for food but to keep up their fluids .

You would be very welcome to drop in and chat about this furthur .

Best regards
