cow's milk

just curious to know how many people here got fed cows' milk when they were babies.

I did - and i'm fine.

When i was in india i went to see twins (born to a friend) that were 3months old. they were being fed cows milk and were doing well. i dared not open my mouth and say 'oh you're not supposed to be giving them cow's milk' (they get stuff that's freshly milked everyday, like a half hour after it's been milked.

i'd like to use cows milk in porridge recipes etc for baby but all this terrible paranoia of cows milk is making me think twice.

Cow's milk is indeed good for baby cows. Maternal milk - no matter which species - is made to measure for the infant of that species. There are major differences in milk constituents, and they are precisely correct for the species. Cow's milk can cause untold damage to the infant human, but not all human babies will react to it. Also, the commonest food allergen - at least in my experience - is to cow's milk.

So - it is not paranoia, but well justified good wellness which fuels the concerns about milk.

The recommendation is to wait until 12 months. It used to be 6 months old up until about 10 years ago.

If you are using small amounts in recipes, it probably cant hurt. I think people are overly concerned about cows milk these days.

But what is stopping you using formula in recipes? It isn't much different and you should have it on hand?

Could anyone advise what is the difference between cows milk and formula in terms of nutrition value? (sorry to hijack your thread kali...)

Not sure about nutrition value but I understood that our babes have a problem digesting cows milk before 12 months of age. Also Breast milk and formula have the correct amounts of fat and nutrients important in early development. I was once told that breast milk was very high in fat??? and if you have ever tasted it (I tasted at least once everything I gave my kids) it is very very sweet.

This is interesting to me as my 14 month old has never had any formula. He was breastfed exclusively for 13 months and then moved straight on to cows milk which he LOVES. He has 3 bottles a day of about 4-6 oz. I asked every doctor and health professional I know whether I should be giving formula or cows milk and the answer has always been in favour of the latter. The reason they gave me was that formula was created to cover all of a baby's nutritional needs, and once a baby is eating regular food (as mine is) they should be getting their needs met through their meals instead of their milk. At this point, milk becomes a merely a supplement. This sounds sensible to me, but like the others on this thread, I also worry about the hormones etc. in cows milk. Following this thread with much interest!

i think mayafox sums it all up very well!

not sure but i recall some old thread about using formula for cooking (or maybe it was a discussion with my friends). i think it's one thing to mix formula with breakfast cereal and fruits to achieve the right texture but i think your food comes out abit weird if you COOK with formula milk and freeze it.

Quick question... Do you ever wonder if your grand-parents or great grand-parents worried so much when they had babies about what milk to give, which formula to use, etc etc?! I personally think we read too many books these days. I srated using fresh cream, yogurt and fresh milk when my baby was 6 months old and never had a problem. If your babies like fresh milk and don't have any allergic reactions, why worry? It's healthy so just give it to them

I think in those days most breastfed for ages anyway, at least my grandmother did. And as for my generation,my mother says she used to go to the local clinic every day or every couple of days to pick up milk for me - which was sort of a formula rather than cow's milk.

nicher: no worries here's a link that lists the nutrients in BM, cows milk and formula http://www.saanendoah.com/compare.html

Yes, mayafox is right. i wanted to stop breastfeeding at 9 months and get my baby to drink formula (he absolultely refuses to have any right now), but maybe i'll just continue and later give him cow's milk. I've noticed that he's not so keen on sweet things and actually likes bland stuff like congee, or pasta without any sauce.

rm60611: our parents, grandparents etc obsessed a lot less it seems, and it would seem that most of us have turned out fine. good for you!

i honestly think that there's major paranoia around cows milk. I'm curious to see what docboat has to say about the harm it does to babies.

I was talking to my mother about why families were so large in those days, and she said because women in my grandmother's generation lost as many babies as those that survived. Which is so horrifying. My grandmother had 8 children and lost 6 - 14 pregnancies !!!! And why did those babies die ? No one is quite sure. Could be the lack of knowledge regarding cow's milk, honey etc etc ? Just a thought !

I watched a show earlier on discussing whether cow's milk is healthy to human body. It mentions about findings of this Dr. Campbell who claims that high protein in cow's milk triggers all kinds of allergy and it's likely to lead to liver cancer. This is the book he wrote about his findings:

It did raise some concern among those who watched that show incl myself. I'm uncertain what to offer.... some of you are right in saying that we prob read too many books *_*

yes - there are major concerns about (say) sodium concentration or other components of cow's milk, but my biggest concern is with food allergies. What can it do? Mmmm .... pretty much anything - depends on the reaction, and what else is going on. But the commonest problems are frequent upper respiratory infections, glue ear etc. I once removed cow's milk from ALL of my mildly bronchitic children in the clinic, and after 10 days, 50% were much improved, worsened after re-exposure.

As for the grandparent argument - we can survive quite a lot. That is a long way from having optimal nutrition, and optimal growth of children - brain and body. But hey - is there paranoia? I think wherever you get diverging opionions, you get fervent pro and anti voices. Also, a lot of people choose what to not see, and some base their whole lives on selective blindness against all evidence, so each to his own.

Not that i want to be polemic or anything, but isn't skimmed milk powder a major component of most infant formulas?

Grandparents take major offense when you tell them that you want to do things differntly from them. In my case, my mother said : i brought up FOUR children and three grandkids. You're just on your first. They can also argue saying that they've got their eyes open to evidence....
