National Day Holiday Destinations

Hi everyone,


I know that the National Day holiday is coming up. I want to get out of Shanghai and go somewhere but everything seems too expensive and especially too crowded. Any ideas about more remote places to go?

I am based in Guangzhou and been planning my oct holiday for more than 1 month now...


I can already tell you that the whole China will be crowded and if you want to fly out of the country you should book your ticket now, because nearly all the flights for south east asia are full or too, too, too expensive.

I agree with Nana81 and i also preparing for my oct holiday now...

I will go to Guilin ...i know there must be crowed but who cares..i need put myself in crowds...i need some friends to celebrate for ...maybe everthing...just wanna enjoy beautiful scenery and laugh around me..

Last year for the National Day holiday, a friend took me and a number of others to the Saihan Embankment in Inner Mongolia. It was great. Middle of nowhere, horseback riding, great food. I think he's going again this year too, but he can only take 10 or 15 people so I would hurry... Leave me a post if you're interested.

If you don't mind an overnight train trip to Guilin, feel encouraged to do so! The city is nothing special but it has a nice ambiente around Buxing Lu, i.e. it's dedicated pedestrian road behind the Sheraton and next to the Youth Hostel. Hotels in the vicinity will set you back around 250 kuai a pop (the YH has rooms for 100).

Try to explore the northern hinterland: Longsheng town and the Yao nationality area of Longji and Ping'an: Rustic, hospitable and friendly. Rooms go for 40 kuai or so (I paid 10 last February but have just returned from the place after paying 40 for a double in a wooden blockhouse).

Yes, the rugged terrain here is under forests, so most houses are traditionally built in timber. A nice alternative to those concrete boxes so common in SHanghai...


You can, of course, also venture south from Guilin and end up in Yangshuo - but beware! Prices will rocket there! Expect to pay 200 or more in a simple guesthouse. However, you might enjoy the atmosphere of charming and quaint Yangshuo. And the beautiful landscape!

Closer to home: How about visiting Qufu, home of CHina's philosophising professor Confucious? A truly old and interesting town, small and humane. Or ZHOUZHUANG between Suzhou and Shanghai?
