....that finds this really scary. The moment that Shenzhen and Hong Kong begin in such a merger will be the same day that I will be packing my bags. A local friend of mine were chatting last year about the slow changes that have occured in HK over the past few years (ie. using RMB in starbucks, relaxing the visas for mainland Chinese, clauses that make it harder to employ expatriate staff ...etc...) and he said that in 10 years HK would be an extention of the mainland but I told him that would never happen.

I please hope that he is wrong

I think you should consider the long term prospects and opportunities that China has to offer. hong kong's geographical location means it can only benefit - look at the positives as well as the potential negatives. Been in HK for 13 years and wouldn't consider moving back to the UK which I regard as more 'unsafe' now than ever before.....

"If you are one of those whose existence in HK is in accordance with the good grace of the HK SAR government then you (like many others) are free to leave at any time."

Don't worry I will

I was out tonight with a large group of my local friends and I told them about the bbc artical and the "city of dreams' piece from the SCMP and they all hated (with passion) the idea of HK and Shenzhen merging into one.

Oh Great, have you been working in China recently. I have and I always find returning to HK a breath of fresh air (with business, not air pollution). I find now that Singapore is using HK's air pollution as a incentive to move to Singapore -good on them, (I've said before that I would never leave HK for anywhere in Asia but it's amazing the last few years have made).

Are you joking?

I'd love love to see HK and SZ merge in 20 yrs not now. We all know SZ and China are dieing (SP?) to get their hands on HK's economy, lets see how long it takes...

Look Vaudine should be shot. And everyone else that thinks it is a good idea. HK is already straining from the overcrowding -road traffic and even pedestrian traffic makes it impossible for me to walk in Central and Causeway Bay at certain times. Half my friends have been mugged in Shenzhen. Yeah - lets give all criminals easy access to HK.

I do not mind the loop idea but there better be very tall bars around it.

This would be death to HK.
