does anyone have experience here - do you need to show evidence of paying all taxes before shipping household effects out of hong kong and leaving for good?

I'm in the process of going through this. Normally your employer will withhold your final pay until you show them the tax release letter. I don't know what happens if you have stopped work some time before you leave - our movers certainly don't care if we have paid our tax! I can't imagine that they will ask you for it at immigration either. After all, how do they know that you are leaving for good? The government may track you down if you don't pay however.

The other reason to get the tax release letter is if you have paid MPF. You can claim it back if you are leaving for good, but you need the tax release letter amongst other things.

i thin your employer is liable for the tax if you leave without paying. Hence they are meant to withold your final salary until you have paid your tax.
