Just curious to hear from other moms how varied are the foods you are giving your little ones? ie. does the baby eat a different food/food combinations every day?

Thank you moms. I was beginning to doubt myself as my hubbie thinks I am being too anal and should relax a bit about our 7-mth old son's weekly menu. I'm a working mom and sometimes it takes a bit of effort and coordination to organise the food shopping, getting the right foods from the right places and ensuring our helper gets the time to batch steam everything. Feel much better after hearing from all of you, thank you!

My baby is about 7 months now and also eats a variety of foods each day. Only thing is that she eats only lunch and dinner. I've tried to take things slow and steady especially since she had a bout of eczema a couple of months ago and am terrified to run into any problems with that.

Cara and other mums, how do you know when to up from 2 meals to 3 meals a day? I have been thinking of starting breakfast, but haven't gotten to doing so.

Cheers.

mumbloxy,

your child is only 7 months, while it's good to introduce new stuff when you can, don't stress yourself out about it, especially since you are also busy working!

at 7 months, you should still be very careful about new foods being introduced in case of allergies. therefore you should try to adopt a 4 days wait rule. if your child is ok for 4 days on a new food, then you move on. if you think of it that way, you (or your helper) don't really have to prepare that much food in a week. e.g. your baby can try the new food for lunch for a few days and you can make a couple of other stuff to rotate for dinner. introducing solids should be a fun, positive experience for the whole family.

and you can also minimise cooking by introducing foods that don't need cooking - bananas, avocados, etc. and during weekends, you can take your baby out and feed organic jar foods instead of trapping yourself at home batch cooking! a jar or 2 a week is fine, helps the child get used to the taste too (very different from homemade) when you have to travel!

I let the tofu marinade in a drop of soy sauce for 10 min then steam it for 10 min. Then I mash it up with a fork.As with my two older children I like to get them used to textured food asap.Very little blending happens in my house! That way I found they were onto finger foods by 7.5 months and my eldest feeding herself completely by 9 months.

Mixed the tofu with veggies tonight-also a hit. Will cream it up with fruit tomorrow for dessert!

Hi Tinky - by completely feeding herself do you mean that she feed herself with fingerfoods or spoon feed herself? My son is 11 months old and I reckon when he'll really be able to feed himself. He also takes finger foods but he only has two teeth so he can't take food too lumpy too.

Tinky, thanks very much for the recipe. i will try steamed tofu on my son and see how he likes it.

mumbloxy, i really think that it's important that you don't get stressed. i think looking after babies is fun like trying new things on them etc is enjoyable for me, but getting stresssed out shouldnìt be part of it.

when you do shop and cook - just make more portions and freeze. yes, it's one food at a time and there's the four day wait - so just rotate stuff so baby gets variety, but think about how to make life easier for yourself (as in it should be a consideration as well).

cara is lucky, mine just spits out jar food - i tried the earth's best one on him and he does'nt want them. mine also doesn't like lumpy foods (maybe just congee with a bit of texture), for the rest he spits it all out or chokes a bit.

I tried giving chopped cooked broccoli to my almost 10.5 month old daughter but she spits it out. What other chopped veges can I try? Off my head, I can only think of steamed carrots.

my 8.5mth old is also eating 3 meals a day, i usually defrost a meat or legume, a veggie and a fruit and split it into 2 meals. For breakfast he is eating baby cereal + fruit. He gets the same meal twice for the day and a different combo the next day...hope that's ok...it's just so much less dishes this way!!

other veggie options, eggplant, parsnips, sweet potato...

mine has been eating the same breakfast forever! a bowl of cereal (weetbix or rice krispies) and a banana. my friend says if adults eat the same breakfast everyday e.g. coffee and toast, why can't kids have the same breakfast everyday? he hasn't complained, gobbles everything up so i don't want to change that!

Thank you all so much for your input. I will continue to soldier on b/t balancing my home & work life. Am sure hubbie & child will appreciate our efforts in the long run, hahahhahhha! On a different note, pediatrician has ok-ed us with starting egg yolks. Would like to hear how you've all introduced it. Was thinking mixing it with congee? Milk & egg yolk doesn't sound so appealing....?

yup hard boiled and mashed up was how is tarted as well - he loved egg yolk so much. still does. it can go into congee, puree'd veggies (but then you don't give any meat with that meal). it makes a puree of carrots and butternut squash so much more creamy..
