I booked myself, little daughter and husband to go on an organised trip from our hotel - one of the Amari hotels and got up at 5.30am or something stupid to go. We were the first to be picked up and spent over an hour collecting everyone. When we got to the floating market, yes we enjoyed seeing it and bought a few chinese style hats but generally tourist tat that you see everywhere else in Thailand. We took a trip on one the boats which my daughter enjoyed.
Part of the tour involved us stopping at some furniture place which really annoyed me. We insisted the tour guide drop us off first but no, we had to endure rush hour traffic coming home and were the last to drop off. I was absolutely furious!!!!
It turns out we could have hired a taxi/limo to take us there and taken much less time.
Was it worth it - not sure. We were exhausted.

Personally i believe if youwant to go there for the shopping it is a total waste of time. Much more expensive than other markets in Bangkok. If it is for the 'sightseeing' experience then i would say yes, it is a nice trip. However i would organise a private trip and perhaps do it in conjunction with an over night/ 2 nights trip to the River Kwai.

It's more to see "a floating market" as this is totally a different enviroment.
I enjoy the floating market. Been there several times.
For ease of travelling, it is advisable to hire a driver. If for a party of 3, works out almost similar cost as charged by the travel desk for those scheduled tours.
