Monks in the streets of HK

Are the guys dressed like monks in Hong Kong, generally asking tourists for money genuine monks? I tend to think not and ignore them. I saw a couple of obvious tourists today handing over at least $200, and given the news, I bet his "donations" will be quite large today. I suppose I should have intervened...

You should if possible. I see many on the bridge from the Ferry to IFC. They are complete fakes... But tourists should know better, if they are not approaching Chinese people.. They should get the idea.

i've heard the buddhist monks in thailand are given donations of food but never money.

wonder what they will do if you put in food in their bowls instead of money.

hmmm maybe i could try and put in a small bag of rice or a bread bun.

I walk from Queens Road East to central and run into about 4 of them everyday on this route.Drives me crazy.I put my earphones on,i look down,i shake my head,i walk around and they still come right up to me and get in my face. With the Indian Fourtunetellers when they tell me i have a lucky face i just tell them i know and walk off, but with these"monks"i just cant shake them no matter what i do

They have been flooding Hong Kong for years. Occasionally the cops pick them up and bundle them off to the border...

In the mainland you can sometimes see them too - they always go for foreigners, handing them a mystical-looking zodiac card. I usually take it and drop it in a rubbish bin - to the "monk's" utter indignation. Yes, they make a living by begging. Monks live in monasteries and beg only within a radius around their monastery; these guys are itinerant and well-to-do - better off than ordinary wage earners!

If they were genuine they wouldn't approach people whose language they cannot speak or understand.
