BURMA - SUPPORT THE PROTESTERS

ORIGINAL POST

Difficult to watch what is going on in Burma without feelings of empathy for the ordinary people who are bravely marching against tyranny.

If the UN and world powers refuse to act to prevent a massive slaughter then perhaps world opinion will somehow shame these butchers into restraint.

It's a small gesture but I suggest we start with bombarding their HK consulate with emails and telephone calls voicing our disgust with their government.

Here are the Hong Kong contacts:

Feel free to post contacts for their embassies and consulates in other cities as well.

Right... the US has all its troops in Iraq looking for WMD eh...

Let's not get into a debate here... at the end of the day I doubt any country will step in because Burma minimal economic value to the majors (sorry to be so cynical)

It does not look like the protests will subside, so the only way to stop this is if the regime comes to the conclusion that its time is up and rather than kill thousands before they fall there is a peaceful handover to the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Voicing our disgust at every opportunity is the best way I can see to hopefully prevent an appalling loss of innocent life. Banging on the doors of their embassies and consulates surely can't hurt.

i have an idea. Stop bickering and do it ALL. All pressure has influence ultimately, not just economic. Even if the value system of those being pressured is only economic or "their daughter's wedding".

This may sound like hocus-pocus and I'm not sure the accurate term for it, but how about using positive thoughts to make a change? When you have a moment to spare, send positive thoughts their way.

I think that any comments that let them know that the world is watching are useful.

There is one country in particular that has a vested interest in Burma and supports the military rule there because of the very nice amounts of raw materials it is able to procure from Burma. People knock US (and I am not an American) and debate whether Iraq was about oil. Well cross the border and we have the worlds most populous nation holding up the regime in Burma not to mention other despots in places like Zimbabwe. Why? Pure greed, so any sanctions will not hurt, words will be empty until the black hair dye gang start condemning what is happening.

FYI: Singapore is Burma's second biggest trading partner...

It makes no difference if every country in the world stops trading with Burma. The junta does not care as they have demonstrated for many decades before they discovered oil and natural gas...
