Automobile expenses

While it seems that purchasing a car in Hong Kong is not too expensive (relatively), I am particularly interested in the on-going costs. My friend has children in several activities so she says she spends about $600 per week on petrol. But, their car is a company one and she doesn't know about insurance or maintenance.

Can anyone give me some general figures on the day to day stuff for owning a car, please?

Well, she and her husband drive cars, so perhaps she was quoting what they both pay per week....??

Easy to do, I used to spend between $600 and $800 a week driving all over HK for work. Insurance - $2000 a year, Vehicle License - $7500 a year, parking (home) $24000 a year, parking (outside) $24000 + a year, tunnel fees $12000+ a year.

Of course it all depends on how many miles you do, where you keep your car, how often you park in other places, how many bridges / tunnels you use, etc, etc.

I was spending around $750 a week on petrol driving the kids to school, shopping, afterschool activites. I did 250 miles a week. Its down to $500-600 a week since one joined her brother at the same school. But don't spend much on parking, free at home, and most places I go do 2 hours free parking when you shop there. Toll fees around $300 a month. Licence $6,000, insurance $2k 3rd party. It would soon add up on taxis and buses the miles I do. Plus its a lot more convienent in a car.
