Grobag: what to wear underneath?

ORIGINAL POST

I bought a grobag for my 4mo baby. I read all the instruction but still confused. Is it really enough to have only a body suit nderneath? What about a sleeping suit? I am not certain because it's really cold in my bedroom the entire year, and the grobag looks so thin! The label says it's 2.5 tag. Can any mums share their experiences?

I put a long sleeves body suit (with no legs) so baby's arms are covered and her lower body won't be too warm. And agree with Cara you should check the back of your baby's neck to see if baby is hot/cold/just nice.

I use 2.5 for temp between 22-24C, and 1.0 if it's warmer.

Thank you for the replies!

Just to clarify: do legs have to be naked? Will my baby be overheated if he is wearing a cotton sleeping suit from Mothercare? I'm just too worried that he'd catch cold if the legs are naked inside the grobag. Am I overreacting?

i am also using 2.5tog grobag for my 3 & half months old bb. I set the air-con to 20'C (cos worried abt overheating). She wears cotton long selvees body suit (with legs) underneath. Like that, she sleeps really well. I tried without legs before. She woke a few times....

Gee guys, 20 degrees! Remember the government tries people to set the aircon at 25.5. If its 30degrees outside you should not have a 10degree difference, it unhealty. I am using a 1.0 Grobag and she wears just a normal body suit. The aircon is on low and temperature is about 25 degrees.

Big problem in HK is people dressign up their baby too much and overheating them, which is far worse then being cold. They say a baby should just have one more layer then you. So for instance, we sleep basically in our undies and have a thin sheet to cover us & aircon low. So our baby has here body suit (long sleeve) and the grobag. You can read on the instructions of grobag that in our climate you only need a 1.0 thickness. Not sure where you get the idea of using 2.5. Why using a thick cover and then put the airon on heigh? Also wondered about the environment? Your kid has to live in this pollution a bit longer then you, great to help reduce the pollution don't you think so?

Yes. My BB has the same problem too. I used to just swaddle her and put long sleeves sleepsuit underneath and set temp to 24/ 25'C. She didn't sleep so well. Then i tried 23'C. She slept better until she started kicking off her swaddle blanket. Then i changed her to 2.5 grobag (cos i couldn't find a 0.5tag one) and put long sleeves with no legs on her, set temp to 23'C, no good. Then 22'C with & without legs, also no good. Then 20' / 21'C, she seems to sleep better now.

What do you suggest i should do, Ms Flower? I also do care about the environment. Apart from BB room, i normally set temp to 24/25 at other rooms. I am actually even using washable nappies on her.

My BB hates to be hot, so she wears a very very thin sleepsuit, no footies. I tried even a 1.0 Grobag on her but she just cannot stand the heat, so we use a burpcloth or a waffle blanket on her. And we keep the room temp at 23 - 24 degrees. Anything hotter and she is covered in sweat. :(

HI well2

You can easily find a 1.0 Grobag in HK. Bought mine at Mothercare I think. But many places have them. So no excuus I think to use 2.5!

I think its also just a matter of getting used too. Also my BB can sweat sometimes on really hot days. Then I just let her sleep with a normal body suit without any Grobag. Actually most of the times during the day, she just sleep in her clothes (she tends to wear a body with some soft fabrics shorts) without any cover and she is fine, sleeps perfectly as well. Sometimes I just cover her up after she fell asleep with a clean waffle blanket.

We hardly use aircon at home because I do not want her to get used to it and become an 'indoor' kid. We live in Clearwater Bay and like her to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. Thats why I want her to be able to be OK without too much aircon.

Hi Ms Flower, tks for your advice. But we live just above busy roads and in the middle of town. Therefore, we can't open the windows. And we need air-con to be on SOMETIMES. We will be moving to Clearwater Bay soon so that we can have fresher air without air-con by then.

Yes. When we bought the 2.5tog 2 weeks ago. The lady at mothercare told us they only had 2.5t0g for 0-6months in stock (maybe becos it's winter soon). They had 1.0 for older babies only. So we had no choice. Baby is now almost 4 months. Think bb will grow out of it by Spring. Then we can get a new one. Do you know where i can get 0.5tog? And also it's winter soon. The 2.5tog should be just right. It's not wise to get 1.0tog and have the heater on next 2 months or so.

Just wanna point out one thing. Not all babies are the same. Your baby is okay without cover. But my BB can only sleeps well with something wrapping her up. It's not like i force her to or i want her to. But she really likes it that way. What can i do? I actually wish she could sleep with only just a bodysuit on...

You can't say all ladies at this thread who have babies like cool air is wrong. I don't think they are trying to train their babies to like air-con.

hi well2

I totally agree that not all babies are the same and living in the middle of the city will not help either. Still, I have been around HK for more then 10 years and have seen how people put their baby in many layers. I even witnessed my own (Western) neighbour putting her baby in a airconditioned room in April (not warm at all) in a full sleeping suit + grobag How double is that?

As I said, you can buy the Grobag everywhere, even on-line. Please see the link

http://www.grobag.com.au/sizes.aspx

It also indicates what to wear with which tickness

Good luck!

Hi Ms flower. Tks alot. Will check out the website.

Agree that some people really do put too many layers on babies. For newborns might be okay. If for older babies, it seems a bit too extreme.

I tried to raise my bb's room tempertare to 23/24'C without legs and then 22'C with legs again today, she woke a few times again. When back to 21'C, she slept fine. Strange! Anyway, i will keep trying. I just bought 2 thinner sleepsuit for her, see if this helps. Cheers :-)
