My child, 7, has been suffering from in growing toe nails of both her big toes.
We have been to the doctors about this as they became VERY painful, red, sore looking and infected. He gave us some cream but doesn't seem to have worked.
It has now got to the stage where it is affecting her life, she can no longer wear her school shoes (too painful) she now wear sandals which makes her very self aware, she can no longer do her sport as she needs to wear her sandals and she can no longer be part of her soccer team (wearing her footie boots is too painful).
She has a docs appointment tomorrow and i want to go in there and ask for a resolution to this, such as nail removal in the hope that it will ease her agony. It's horrible to see her suffer.
Just want to know if anyone has any pointers as how to deal with this and what next.
Thanks

Do a google search for ingrown toenails child and you will find LOTS of excellent information there.
Please give her a hug and I do hope that the info helps her! It must be so frustrating for her!

Surgery is an option, and surgery can be simple (removal part of nail) or more permanent . However the latter is normally not done in a young person.
Professional chiropody can prevent a recurrence and sometimes even treat the problem in conjunction with a course of antibiotics.

Update.....
Took her back to the docs yesterday and explained to him how it is now affecting her daily routine and is stopping her doing things, also told him that my daighter was finding it painful and she then also explained the same to him.
He basically turned round and said it couldn't be that painful, use the cream and i'll give you antibiotics.
I then asked if she could see a chiropodist or podiatrist and he said that neither of those people would be able to do any good and to do as he has said.
To say i was knocked sideways was an understatement, as i have always liked and admired this well known doc and felt very undermined (if that's the right word) and not heard.
I will give it until Friday and then make alternative arrangements.
Oh and thanks Matilda and Ruth.

Try Karlyn Harfoot, a podiatrist with a clinic in Pottinger Street, Central. She is very good with children and she should be able to help. I think she also attends a weekly clinic in the Matilda Hospital. You don't need a referral from a doctor.
