Baby strollers are difficult to use in Guangzhou. The streets are so bumpy and sidewalks are in bad repair, not always with ramps to go up and down. Also a baby in a stroller means that people will feel free to touch your baby, pinch your baby, stroke your baby and even pick him/her up and try to carry her/him around. Seriously! They say it is because they LOVE your baby so, but think of how much exposure a newborn baby really needs to strangers. Not THAT much. I remember a friend of mine literally trying to fight off a really filthy homeless old lady who was intent on pinching her 1 month old's cheeks. She got quite scared after that and ended up using a sling.
For a newborn baby, a sling or any kind of baby carrier that keeps baby close to you is MUCH better. It's good for the baby as they feel more secure, they're warmer, they can hear your heartbeat and breathing and they'll keep cleaner and healthier that way too. It's also good for them to be more upright and moving with you. You can get lovely baby slings in HK and some in GZ as well. Look at some websites for mail order as well.
In GZ I could always find cheap slings at the ChangShouLu market (it's also a Metro Station). There are also a number of carrier systems for front or back of the parent or caregiver. There is also a HUGE baby market on the south side of the street on Zhong Shan 8 Lu with everything you can imagine for babies. If you really want one, you can certainly get strollers at the baby market there as well. The Friendship Stores also have strollers.
The main thing with strollers is can you get the stroller open and closed easily and does it feel sturdy? Does it move well and smoothly? Is it easy to keep clean if baby pukes all over it? Is there a storage area for a diaper bag and extra stuff?
Get your wife to ask the ladies of www.gwic.org for help with all things baby too!
Good luck and hope your wife has a Happy Birth Day!

Thanks so much Ruth and my wife told me that the first reply from you will be from Ruth and she was so dead right. I even followed yr advise to get the suitcases from Dong Fang Hotel.
Wifey had already attended the GWIC once and has made a few mommies there. She has gone back home to her moms as she was not finding GZ safe due to the language issues we had at clifford, plus we are yet to settle down here ( our stuff is still in HK ) so kinda doing this myself.
Thanks a ton for yr advise...
Cheers...Ash
I will be joining her in 2 weeks time for the delivery .
