Hubby will be on business trip to Japan next month and asks if I'd like to bring baby along. He will be 1 year old by then. I'd love to go but my biggest concern is what food I'm going to feed him there. Currently we home-cook his food and put it in a thermo container when we are on the go. He never likes jar food. And in Japan I'm bit worried about the language barrier even if we ask the hotel to prepare baby food. From what age can we allow baby/ toddler to eat out at a restaurant? (maybe a kids meal or sthg?)

i have never been to japan but i wouldn't worry too much because it's really so much easier after they turn one.
i wouldn't use the trip as an opportunity to try out exotic shellfish and the usual allergens like nuts if you haven't already.
but for regular meals, i would think you can find something from the hotel buffet brekkie. and for lunch and dinner, basic rice/veggies/meat, something with soup or gravy to mix it all up should do if he's been exposed to a good variety of food to date.
but as a backup, i would still pack some jar food in case things really don't work out along with his usual breakfast cereals, biscuits and dried fruits (e.g. raisins) for snacks.
have a great time and manage your expectations - it'll be such an exciting experience for him so don't expect him to eat his usual amounts at home.

Thank you Saikunga and Wheely... I'm not too concerned about the varieity of food, but rather, the seasoning they put in when we eat out. Ok he probably will happily share the well-seasoned food that we eat during the trip, but will he ever go back to his old diet at home?
Another question I'd like to ask is, when do you start adding more seasoning to their meals?

my boy is 19 months old and i still rarely add salt into his food (which is what we eat too), esp. if i am using salted butter, cheese, etc since that's already got salt in it. and i will definitely not buy anything that's got MSG in it.
but most weekends, we have at least one meal outside which probably has more seasoning that he will ever eat at home...whether it's roast dinner at the pub or dumplings. and he's still happy to eat both homecooked and outside food....he is very greedy though!

I think he'll be fine. Japanese food is not too strongly seasoned really, and I am sure they would do something plain for your baby if you asked them. Get one of your husband's business partners or a Japanese friend to write something out for you.
You could write to one of the La Leche League English Groups in Japan and ask for some baby friendly restaurant ideas!

Hi,
we just returned from a family holiday in KL and Kota Kinabalu with our one year old. Like you, I was worried that she wouldn't like the food on offer etc. I was so wrong, she loved it! She ate everything we ate, some things she liked and some she didn't. The buffet brekkie at the hotel was a huge hit and she would sit happily eating 'bacon' (beef), chicken sausages, scrambled eggs, croissants (her favourite!), cereals and fruits. We just put diff things in front of her and let her feed herself.
The downside is that she looks a little disappointed with her brekkie now we are at home, rice cereal just doesn't cut the mustard these days!
Have fun.
