If I were you I'd have a discrete word with your son's teacher. I can assure you that primary school teachers have to deal with this kind of issue on a fairly regular basis, and most schools would actively discourage 'clubs' and 'gangs' in the playground. It can obviously be be quite distressing for the child who is left out. I'm sure his teacher will be able to handle the situation in the classroom and inform anyone who is on duty in the playground. Just try to reasure your child and try not to worry too much about it, I'm sure it will all blow over pretty soon. Good luck.

I have no experience, but i say give your son a big pat on the back for choosing not be bossy! it's great that he's making such decisions even if it means exclusion by his friends. wow!
