Hello! I am trying to plan a visit for my family who are coming here from the US and they have never been to Asia before. They will arrive into Hong Kong and depart 11 days later. Right now, we are considering going to Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. My question is, to get from Beijing to Xian, would it be better to fly to Xian and spend the night there or should we take just a day trip (Fly out early in the morning, return to Beijing at night?) I found a few "tour group" packages for approximately $400 USD per person to do the day trip to Xian, but we would only be able to see the terracotta warriors and the city wall...does this sound like a good trip? Please help, I want their time in China to be AMAZING!

Stay overnight, you won't be able to do anything properly otherwise. Dependng on the type of accommodation you want, the Sofitel Renmin Square was very comfortable.

I agree, stay at least one night in Xi'an. Apart from the terracotta warriors and the city wall, there are some nice markets and food in the Muslim quarter (and of course a Mosque), and the Shaanxi History museum is definitely worth a visit. I originally planned to stay 2 nights in Xi'an, but ended up spending 5 days there.
By the way, the price of the tour group packages you mentioned are quite reasonable - a round trip ticket from Beijing to Xi'an usually costs around 240 USD. Together with other transportation costs, you'd probably spend around 300 USD, but you won't have the convenience of having guides who arrange everything for you.

Oh yes, and the towers and pagodas in Xi'an are quite nice as well.

We went to Xian during the holiday, we stayed three days, not enough though and would love two days more.
Worth going for the terracota warriors, just amazing. Visit the Moslem Quarter, 'twas fun, try the Chinese-style pizza opposite the big tea store, the best in that area.
Or assorted dumpling, arrange for your travel agent to do it, then you get better service, it can be very crowded.
We stayed at the Bell Tower hotel, not the best but the location is, opposite the bell tower.
Try to ask for rooms facing the tower.
