My doctor recommended that you should not give a child under one years old Benadryl. It can either act as a sedative or can cause a counter-reaction by making the baby irritable or hyperactive. My baby is now 10 months old and we've taken over 20 flights, half of them long-haul; he didn't need anything at all. I would definitely research this. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless the baby is in serious distress when flying, not the parent! There are lots of threads on here about flying with babies, most of us on here have done it and have fared pretty well. Good luck!

There have been a series of recalls of children's (under age 2) medication in the US. The FDA now recommends that children under 2 are not given cold medicine. Not sure which Benedryl you are mentioning but you may want to check out this article before offering meds to your baby. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21247580/

I would also suggest you speak with your dr. I am taking a 15hr flight home alone with a 10mth old. I too have heard about giving meds to baby but have decided not to do that.

our son is 21 months and had a really bad rash last week. the dr gave him benadryl and it helped A LOT with the rash, and he slept really well and was very tired... but when he woke from his nap he was not his usual self, he was a bit grumpy and tired. It did help with the rash though, so we had to use it for a couple of days. (the rash was all over and really really bad!)

I would prefer to fly with him normally than on 'drugs' - and we have flown with him (and our 6 month old) - it isn't that bad. Sure, there are moments when you want to change seats, but the majority of the flight it pretty good. If you can afford it, get the baby a seat and bring a car seat that is approved for the airline you are on - that was our best flight ever!

Oh, and do my husband's trick - wander up and down the aisle with your cute baby so everyone falls in love with him... then they are more patient when he cries hahaha On one flight when he was about 7 months old other passengers offered to hold him and to walk around with him to give us a break!

Having flown with my two numerously as well - I can tell you that I always carry a bottle of phenergen with me. To this date, I have never had to use it, but I always love the peace of mind that if things get out of control - (one of mine has obsessive behaviours and never sleeps) - I am sure just knowing the phenergen is there has kept me calm.

Ask your doctor and they will prescribe something for you. I would give a little as a test run, as some medicines (phenergen for example) can cause hyper-activity in some children and you don't want to find that out on the plane.

A good friend of mine had a child who detested long car journeys. On the advice of her doctor she duely fed the child a little phenergen for an 8 hour car journey. The child turned completely hyper and she said it took days for their nerves to quiet down.

So if this is for a long - haul flight, I would have some handy, in your hand luggage (remember the 100ml hand luggage liquid rule) - most small cough medicines come in 125ml - but I have never had a problem with a sealed one of those.

Rather than cough syrup or supposed sedative we would give our little man a half dose of liquid Pamol at the time he was due to sleep, plus lots of milk at that age, figuring that with a full belly he would sleep easier. This seemed to work wonders for us.

Good luck

We used Medised (from the UK) on a recent flight and at home for colds - seems to work well.
