Hello,
My wife is moving back to HK(She is hong kong citizen) and I will hv to move over there around next April. We will apply for my HKID as soon as I'm there. I hv been searching for jobs here but not able to find any jobs here yet. I m a machanic and my wife told me its not possible to make a living as a machanic there. But I need a job there so we dont hv to live apart from each other. Is there any other job seaching websites for western people? Or do you guys have any advices? Please help! Thank you!

Any potential employer must demonstrate he cannot find a local hire for a job before he can hire an expat. I don't think you will be able to find a job as a mechanic in HK as there are loads of qualified local people.

Hi ysljjj. If you looking for a job don't bother with this site. From what I can see each role wants fluent Cantonese or Mandarin and to be honest how many expats have these language skills. Your best bet is to network with friends or even start your own business.

Hi,
I think you might find the most difficult aspect (if you do manage to find work as a mechanic) is the pay. You will find some expat garage owners in HK but very few employees as they employ local labour, qualified and unqualified, at salaries that most expats can't afford to live on.
I know this is a cliche, but if you are willing and able, and are serious about living here, you might find teaching your best option for long term employment here.
(however as a car owner living in Sai Kung, I would love it if i can find a trustworthy mechanic out this way!)
cheers

Thank you all for the advises. Well, I think I will hv to look for all different kinds of options there instead of mechanic, not sure if I can get a job for teaching as I have no experience, but I will look for other jobs in order to stay together with my wife out there.
Clare, I had been to Sai Kung last time when i was there, its a very beautiful place. I m serious about living in HKG, HKG is a great city, i will try my very best to make it over there.

I beg to differ with Ed regarding your right to take up employment in Hong Kong.
'Dependants of persons not subject to a limit of stay, e.g. Hong Kong permanent residents and those with unconditional stay or right to land in Hong Kong, are not prohibited from taking up employment.'

I suggest you check with immigration - I believe that prior to 1998 a spouse on a dependent visa could take up whatever work they wanted without a visa but after 1998 that rule was changed.
