Our baby is 2 and a bit weeks old and is generally very good....except between 8-10pm when he has a total melt down! the only thing that will stop his screaming (that we can work out!) is to breastfeed - tonight he was on for 1.5 hours and after 20 mins started yelling for more - he is arching he back with his mouth open - the sign we take for hunger....can he really need that much!!! he is very small so maybe just making up for being a small baby....

anyone else had this experience? any tips on how else to calm him down?

from mum with sore boobs!!

Hi...he is probably experiencing growth spurt..the day mine turned 3 weeks, she was the same, i would barely keep her down for half an hour after nursing continuously and she would be hungry again and just about the same down she started fussing and crying in the eve ie getting colicky...just hang on there..growth spurt doesnt last more than 2 3 days..he wil be fine after that and if hes colicky u can try infacol ( thats what the well baby clinin advised) and it worked for her though i also gave occasional gripe water...she was colicky bet 3 weeks to 3 months and then it went away so just hang in there!!

All of my three babies cluster fed at this time of night, abit exhausting but they all settled down by about three months. Also remember that your milk supply could be at its lowest at the end of the day, especially if you have done too much running around yourself.Try to make sure you get a rest during the afternoon when he sleeps.Even if that doesn't stop the cluster feeds it will put you in a better position to handle the demand.

He is still very young, before you know it you will have more of a routine in place-until the next growth spurt that is!

Make sure that you are drinking enough water during the day. If your urine is bright/dark yellow, then you need to drink more. Have a bowl of oat porridge or granola for a snack and then a nap in the afternoon too...it can help fill you up and the rest will be valuable so you'll have more energy to be able to get through that rough time. Breast compression can help get more milk in faster...google it and it will come up. Try to make sure that your baby has a nice big mouthful of breast, not just the nipple.

And do call Sarah from La Leche League...she can give you some more reassurance too. http://www.lllhk.org/

This too shall pass, hon! Hang in there and your baby will be over this hurdle with you before you know it. It's just a phase...

do get yourself a tube of LANSINOH from bumps to babes. It's a godsend for sore nipples. really really soothing and you don't need to wash it off before you feed the baby. get it asap!!

Mine clusterfed all evening too. i found it very stressful, as i was and still am in constant doubt about my milk supply 'my baby is now 8 motnhs old!

This is very common behavior in the evening for most babies. It is called cluster feeding and often coincides with a baby's fussy period. During cluster feeding baby's feed frequently for 2 to 4 hours or non-stop for long periods. Often it is accompanied by pulling on and off the breast with fussy, crying behavior. It may be followed by a longer period of sleep so this is your baby's way of "tanking" up before a long sleep.
