Buying a Car

I'm moving to HKG and have seen cars are cheap. I'm thinking about a Mercedes, what is the expense of buying owning a car. Is anual insurance expensive and is there a high anual tax. Also can a car be taken back to Australia?

What is the quality of these cars?

Cars can be cheap, but be cautious, as there are plenty of unscrupulous dealers, who wind back the odometer, or do quick repairs. But there can be good cars if you look carefully and be really thorough.

There are lots of threads on this board that discuss ongoing costs, which can be high.

Petrol is about twice as expensive as Oz so keep this in mind when buying a large car. Also, when registering cars in HK, the bigger the engine capacity, the higher the rego costs. I don't remember insurance being too bad (my small car about $800AU pa). Car parking can be very expensive - virtually nowhere is free to park - so make sure you will have a home for the car.

Lots of expats sell luxury cars when they leave - much cheaper than the same model/age in Aust. My understanding is you can take the car back to Aust but there is duty to pay and shipping costs - only worth it for the expensive cars.

Reg for my 1.5 litre car - about $550AU pa - this increases alot with larger engine size.

Once you arrive a good place to look for expats selling their cars is the noticeboards outside Wellcome and Park N Shop supermarkets on Southside.

Many places include at least one parking space in with the rent. I have lived in 5 places in HK and have never had to pay for parking. Also most shopping malls now do up to 2 hours free parking when you shop there.
