Safety Locks for Windows???

ORIGINAL POST

I've just moved to Hong Kong and am new to high rise living. We are currently living on the 17th floor and the windows terrify me. There are no screens or locks and I'm really worried that my 4yr old or even my 2 year old could easily open them as they don't have any real concept of danger and fall out. For the time being I've tried tying them shut with string but does anyone know where I could buy some kind of attachable window lock? Surely in the land of high rise there must be something on the market or children would be falling out windows all the time.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated and help me sleep a little better!

Another solution is having bars installed on the windows. Every flat we've moved into has either had the bars already on the windows or we've asked the landlord to have them installed before we moved in - a request which has never been denied so it cannot be very expensive.

There should be a plumbing/electrical shop somewhere in or near your housing estate that already has the measurements for your windows.

We just moved out of a high rise and i dont need my locks for my windows anymore. We had many windows so i have lots of them. They are really great as you just install them to the top of the window and you can decide how wide you want the window.PM me if you want to buy them

Thanks

We had the same problem when we moved into our apartment. Our 4 year went directly to window and opened it right up and I completely freaked out! We had terrible trouble with the landlord about putting in window locks because she did not want it to interfere with the windows!! We basically had a row and insisted that if something is not done then we will do something ourselves. We ended up having very small brackets put in at the bottom of each window and now the window will only open about 10 centimetres, enough to let the breeze in. Best thing we ever did as I can't stand the bars. I suggest you contact a locksmith who would know what to do.

It depends on the windows you have but ask around at your apt. I found some which were recommended by others in our block which were called a 2 bar limit hinge which could be installed and effectively rivetted into metal frame, and they stop window being opened too far, but you can use the Key to open the window fully. PM me if you want the contact details of the person who installed ours and maybe they can provide you with a suggestion.
