Pls help me with Now TV, Broadband, etc.!

So, I'm about to sign up for NowTV + Broadband in a duplex (2 stories) I'm moving into.

They say that I can only activate ONE outlet in the entire house. From that outlet, I can connect the ADSL modem, then the Now decoder, and a TV (or more than one). Also, I can connect a computer and/or a wireless router to the modem.

2 problems with this:

1) I want to have a TV in my bedroom and in the living room (on different floors). Other than a long cable from the decoder to the upstairs TV (assuming the decoder is downstairs), there is no way to do this.

1A) Even if I somehow did this, I could only watch one channel on both TV's.

2) Since it's a 2-story place with concrete floors, wireless will probably not work sufficiently. And I REALLY need a fast internet connection both upstairs and downstairs.

The internet is the bigger issue; I can live without TV upstairs, or only one channel if I do.

In short, I really can't believe that there are 5 network ports in 5 different rooms in my house, but I can only use ONE of them. What sense is that? Someone, please tell me this is not true.

The only potential way around this I can come up with (assuming what PCCW says to me is true) is to use the coaxial cable outlet as a wired home network. That is:

Cat5 cable from the wall downstairs to the ADSL, CAT5 out from the ADSL, to a CAT5-to-Coax adapter, coax into the wall downstairs.

Upstairs, coax from the wall to a coax-to-CAT5 adapter, CAT5 to my computer.

And I still get only one TV.

Someone please tell me there is a better way!

(asap please, I want to sign up tomorrow)

Thanks!

Wow, this all sounds far too technical for me. The sort of thing my brother normally takes care of. I'm in Guangzhou and I, too, have been told that only one of my outlets will work. Further investigation revealed two things:

1) Other outlets in my apartment have previously been set-up to make use of the broadband internet that was, at one time, provided by the management office to all tenants.

2) These outlets can be re-set but since no-one seems to know who would be the correct persong to authorize the work, the attitude here seems to be that the whole matter is far too much bother and I should just be happy to make do with one outlet.

I've been lucky with my wireless modem - the signal hasn't met any significant obstacles. I had considered alternatives along the lines suggested here http://www.voip-sol.com/10-ways-to-boost-your-wifi-signal/

As for the TV, well I've heard about devices that can send AV wirelessly, but I have no idea what the latest developments in this field are. A quick search turned up this http://www.maplin.co.uk/searchtemplate.asp?criteria=WIRELESS%20SIGNAL%20SENDER

Sorry this isn't a very technical sort of reply, but I hope it might be useful.

think there are 2 issues here..

Where they'll cable ... mmm ... I have NOW TV on 1 floor and broadband on the other so shouldn't be issues there - try being more pushy! if the CS is not being helpful try asking for the duty super...

If all else fails you could probably get someone to extend the cabling for you...

Second is how many outlets ... am not surprised you've been told only one set of outlets, although a) believe it is legal to use network sharers and b) can't believe they would install an extension for you if you get through to the right people on the phone...while ago they had a promo on but maybe not now...anyway for small extra charge you should be able to get extensions run (may need to subscribe a package with multiple user accounts)..

Hope this helps

Ringah,

How does your setup?

Does the NowTV require both the black ADSL broadband box, plus the NowTV decoder? And upstairs do you have another one of the ADSL boxes, for your broadband?

Hi - you'll need a broadband modem connected to the phone system, and a NOW decoder - the modem has to be connected to the phone line, the decoder can be somewhere else...in my setup the modem is on one floor, the now decoder on another. If you push them it should be possible to install a 2nd modem on the upper floor, same with NOW broadband decoder, however there would be an extra charge..hope this helps

If u are planning to get the Broadband + NowTV package, it comes with a modem n a decoder. Decoder for TV and modem for Broadband.

Since u said that ur house has 5 Network Port...than definitely there is a output of all the cables(at my boss house, it all comes out in the kitchen). So all u need to do is setup ur modem there and get urself a router. Plug in all the network cables into the router which leads to all rooms in ur hse. Than connect the router to ur modem and setup ur router. Now all ur rooms has wired internet connection. Do remember that the whole house will be sharing 1 Broadband line.

As for having 2 tv's and watching different channels, u need 2 sets of decoder.

thanks for all the feedback.

they came and set everything up in the living room. I'veverified that I can take the modem upstairs and it works. next I'll try keeping the decoder downstairs, without the modem. and, I'll try hooking up the wired network in the house. I'll post how it goes.
