I need to hire a car in Melb for 3 weeks as my folks live a thousand miles from the city, and I need to commute - does anyone know CHEAP car hire as the cost quoted so far is same price as air ticket..

Check out www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au (not kidding!). The website searches all available car rentals for your applicable period and you can book through them as well. The good thing is that they do not charge your credit card, you just pay the rental company at pick up. Not sure what you were hoping for, but AUD 670 for 3 weeks seems reasonable for me.
