Good bread in Beijing?

ORIGINAL POST

I've been in Beijing for almost eight years and until recently, I was able to get decent reasonably priced European style brown bread or heavy white at the Friendship store, the Luftthansa Center and Jenny Lu's. However, that bakery seems to have either folded or been absorbed by some outfit that makes Chinese style bread which seems to be made with cake flour. Of course, you can pay the price of a meal for a loaf at some places, but has anyone found a bakery that turns out something edible and affordable? I would appreciate your help, thanks, Mike

Ole & Paris Barquette has a couple of outlets, World Trade Center(Guamao) or in the basement level at Oriental Plaza.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. I also did find something at Jennie Lou's by Chao Yang park. It's a german bakery. They have a heavy dark that might suit some, but I found the cheaper rye loaves at about 20 rmb to better suit my budget and taste, thanks again, Guy

Thanks, I think that's the next step. The only problem there is finding some interesting flours besides the standard white. They do have a dark white, but I wouldn't know where to find ryes, and other interesting ingredients, thanks again, Guy

For a long time, being unable to find large bags of flour (HK grocery stores sell very small boxes of flour) prevented us from buying a breadmaker.

Fortunately, someone on the practical forum mentioned buying flour from flour mills; however, they are quite far away from our home and we don't have a car. With a bit more research, my husband was also able to find 25 kg bags of flour (unfortunately not whole wheat) at a nearby restaurant supplier - they also sold some nice, cheap red wine. So we've been enjoying bread and wine!

Try flour mills or restaurant suppliers in Beijing.

wow! I am pretty happy with the 1 kg bags (Guy - we are lucky here - tons of different types incl corn, rye, you name it) you find all over HK, aemom! I would not even have a clue where to store a 25 kg bag in our HK flat!

I know a store in Chaoyang district, Lohao City, you can visit the website first www.lohaocity.com, then go to their stores, they have 3 stores in Chaoyang district. They have their own farm and sell most of the organic food and vegetable and multi rice and juice, flour there.... they also make fresh bread everyday with the organic flour. Anyway, you can have a look there. One is near Luftthansa Center , in B4 29#lucky street. You can also order on phone or online, they can deliver to your place.

I am with Idsllvn. I bought a bread machine about one month ago - we love our bread now - the variety and quality are both great.
