Which do you use or prefer? I'm thinking of replacing my OLD duvet with a quilt. Are they just as good, better or worse? Your thoughts appreciated.

In england, they are they same thing. The feather or polyester filling that you put inside different covers. Although a quilt used to be the handmade patchwork type that you put on the bed more as decoration with other covers underneath, in recent years the 2 names mean the same. So not sure what you mean by what is better. Personally I prefer a feather filled one.

yes, same thing, Devon, you need to explain a bit more - same as cd we like the feather one (or down one) - you can buy the ones that are in two layers - so can use both for winter or separate them and use just one layer for summer

Sorry, I meant to be more specific. I'm talking about the handmade patchwork style quilt (as cd said) which is usually made big enough to hang over the bed reaching the floor. You'd probably have to put blankets or something underneath to keep warm in winter. Just wondered if people had preferences over a duvet or quilt for bedding.

In which case a quilt would be harder to wash, you can't just take the cover off and put in the washing machine. We have normal feather quilts (in the winter, just the covers in the summer), but I now have a lovely homemade patchwork cover for decoration on the bed that my friend made for me.

i thought quilt was pretty much for "decoration" and people did not actually sleep under it? I mean it is not as cosy as duvet, right?? never knew anyone who slept under one I am afraid - not much help Devon, sorry!
