Prescription glasses & lenses cost

I am moving to HK in the coming weeks, and I was wondering if I should get my prescription lenses updated here in Australia or wait until I get to HK, specifically with regard to prices.

I need 3 new pairs of lenses for existing frames which will cost around $3000-$4000 HKD equivalent here, plus I want to get a fourth pair of glasses which will cost around $2000-$3000 HKD equivalent for a (designer) frame and about $1000 HKD for the lenses. So in total I'd be looking at around $7000 HKD to buy them here in Oz. They are covered somewhat by medical insurance but not that much.

Assuming they were not covered by my medical insurance in HK, would I expect to save any money by waiting until I get to HK? Are prices for frames and lenses in HK comparable to those above? Many thanks.

My husband and I both wear glasses and we went to Lens Crafters which I reckon is the equivalent of OPSM and they were really good. I got designer label for my spectacles and my sunglasses and paid HK$4,400 and yes that included lens and frames! We also got a discount because both my husband and I bought our glasses at the same time. We also were given one month and if we weren't happy we could change the frames or lens. They were great with follow up care as well. I think it's well worth getting it done here in Hong Kong.

Thanks, will check out the lens crafters website. Those prices seemed reasonable. And I think I underestimated the lens cost by half - so I'd actually be looking at closer to $9K HKD equivalent for 4 pairs of lenses at my optometerist in Sydney, without the additional designer frames I want to get.

Just had a thought - what does an optometerist (say at lens crafters) charge to check your eyes? Here in Oz it is covered by the govt so I have to take that into account too.

I buy my frames (designer) in Shenzhen - v. cheap and get lenses in Hong Kong.
