WE have a 7 year old bed we love but in the last few months both of us have noticed waking up with a sore back and some lower back pain which disappears within an hour or so of waking. We believe it is to do with our bed but do we change the mattress or the whole bed?

What do people think? We dont want to get rid of the bed. Infact one plan is to keep the existing double bed and move it to guest room, just replacing the mattress. Then we'd have space and buy a new master bedroom bed (probably a queen). However, if the bed's life is over, we'd just buy a new guest bed too as we have guests coming to stay for the next few months so they do deserve a good bed.

Well, the question is HOW DO YOU TEST whether your bed is ready to be chucked out? It is a wooden slatted bed.

Any ideas on where to get a simply designed bed, high off the ground with an upholstered head board? Is a divan better than slats? Had a look in Aplei Chau but wasnt too impressed by the choice.

Hi Saikunga

Thanks for the response. Really helpful. Do you remember the name of the shop / any distinguishing features. I assume you were on Queens Road East? I know IKEA are non standard sized mattresses, so wondered if SOGO/ WING ON might be better bets. Dont want a tempura or foam but a good pocket sprung mattress.

it is the mattress that matters, not so much the bed frame - as long as it is wooden slates, what difference does it make how much the frame cost? The mattress does make a difference - and one should buy the best mattress they can afford, indeed..

oh my goodness. Obviously opened up a can of worms here. Where can I try out a "Hastens"? Wrt to the double bed I have got which I want to move to the guest room- I will check the slats and see how these appear and whether the bed just needs tightening up with an allen key. Then go and get a good mattress - Where is the best place for a good mattress for adults and children?

The tempur pillows - I saw them in aplei chau but wasnt really given any proper advice. Again, where do you go for these?

I definitely want individual pocket sprung and not the nasa foam mattress for the guest room and my room. Where is the best place? What are the brands worth looking at? Saw Sealy, Simmons Back Rest 3 which looked really good and some cheaper makes at Aplei Chau.

Wrt bed you saw Saikunga, if you do ever pass by the shop, please let me know the name. Was it ARTURA FICUS? I thought the bed design looked nice in Aplei chau. Wrt slats - not really sure what i should be looking for - eg how far apart the slats should be, what type of wood to specify, whether there is some give?

hi, artura ficus is v nice but tends to be v expensive - we bought our (2) beds from Tequila Kola in Aplei Chau - there are a lot of dif designs there - not cheap either - but seemed to be a lot more choice than Artura Ficus.

For the matresses we went to Sogo and Wing On - have a look in both - I believe in the end we bought them in Sogo..

Good that you know to check the Ikea sizing - I got caught out with their duvet sizes. Price and time were the 2 main factors involved in our bed buying here in HK but the King Koil we got from Pricerite is the best bed I've ever had. My bed in NZ was way more expensive and more carefully purchased and is no where near as comfortable. They also through in 2 of those really expensive pillows but we don't like them.

Hi everyone,

I found great simmonds mattresses and slumberland too in SOGO but didnt like their bed designs. We definitely want to invest in the mattress.

I have looked at two shops which are considerably cheaper than Artura - intend ltd and comfort living to make up the bed frame for our new bed. Both in HOrizon Plaza. Has anyone got experience of using either of these shops? Also, does anyone know anyone else who can make up a simple bedframe. We are looking for a microfibre headboard, bed quite high off ground to put our bed boxes underneath. , queen size (6ft, 6" length) bedframe in dark wood.
