My baby just turned one. He's been exclusively breastfed so far. I want to gradually replace the 3pm with formula - the feed which he is taking less and less milk anyway.
Can anyone recommend which brand of formula to give at his age? What factors should I consider? Do I need to choose organic? Is there a big difference in terms of taste? Some people told me that Japanese brands help prevent constipation. Is that true?
Thanks!

Organic is a choice you would make out of preference and is what I have done with both of my children and they seem to do well on it. I use Hipp which I switched to after I used another main brand which gave my eldest strange bowel movements!

there are quite a few threads recently on different formula - have a search under "formula" and have a read - of course everyone has their own pref, but most people (incl me) tend to believe in big "western" brands, such as Aptamil (my choice), Hipp, Cow and Gate. They are all pretty much alike - you have to try it and see what suits you/your baby best.

sorry to intrude nicher, but quick question to pokfulammum, is hipp formula sweet tasting?
Please support our advertisers:
I'm not sure if it's sweet in comparison to other formula, but it certainly seems a bit sweet to me - just take a look at the ingredients - I think they all have sugar in them but I'm sure some more than others.
I think it tastes revolting though, but I thought the first one I tried was even worse!!

God... I tasted breastmilk. It tasted foul to me... so I have no clue why babies love it haha! I guess formula would probably taste somewhat similar?
Anyway, I did give him cow's milk but he doesn't seem like it either.

if baby is more than 12 months old and not allergic to cow's milk, you might want to press harder with the cow's milk route before deciding on formula. it takes time to get them used to it. i find life is sooooo much easier without formula and powder!

Hi Wheelymate, I agree 100% with the convenience part. But is the formula fortified with whatever vitamins which makes them sound more superior than cow's milk? Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

For that, you should check with your PD. I personally don't believe in it because I reckon my kid is get ample vitamins and nutrients from his food. I just think that after 1, milk is still important but not the only source of goodness in a child's diet.

that is if they are good eaters, Wheelymate, then yes. Mine are very fussy and go through stages when they just dont eat - so I decided to stick to the formula for another couple of months - until they are 18 months or so - just to make sure they get that little extra vitamins..
As for sweet tasting - I believe all formula is... :(

Some books say that we have to add iron supplements in the food if breastfeed. What types of food contain sufficient iron? Or do we need to add iron drops?

nicher i tasted bm too, to check what the fuss was all about, and am still wondering ;))
having bought about four different brdands without successfully convincing baby, i noted the difference was also the smell; cow and gate for example smells of codliver oil, enfapro and enfamil are the least smelly.
i heard the hipp organic was publisized as no sugar added. my baby seems to prefer things that are not sweetened, from his breakfast porridge to his yoghurt.
my baby eats ok, maybe i'll just give him cows milk and see what happens after 10 months.

Ok, this afternoon at 3pm, my helper offered him three cups. First cup - water. He spits it out. Second cup - cow's milk. He spits it out. Third cup - juice. He drinks happily from it. Ay.... What shall I do??? It's been a few days in a row that we tried him on cow's milk but he doesn't want to drink from it (we always offer him milk first and if he really refuses it, we give him a little bit of juice with snacks). Is it a sign that he doesn't want milk at tea time any more? Or shall I try something else?
I'll check out Hipp tomorrow. It's only available in B2B right? And I remember the pack is BIG... I hope he accepts it....

my pediatrician's not very kind advice was ; starve him a wee bit and he'll drink it (in answer to my complaint that he didn't want any other milk).
Also, use a teaspoon to introduce things (like milk) while baby is in a good mood on ahigh chair and distracted with something else - like a toy....

i'm trying to give my daughter (13.5 months) cow's milk. the first time i gave it to her she just spat it out and refused to drink it. so now i'm adding the cow's milk gradually one ounce at a time to her formula (minus one ounce the formula) for a period of 5 days and hopelly she'll get used to the taste of cow's milk by the time the bottle is of cow's milk only. maybe you can also do this with BM.

We breast fed #1 for 13 months, and introduced cows milk in a cup with a straw at 12 months. We plan to do the same with #2 (now 7 months old).
In HK we bought Pura Full Fat Milk. In Beijing we get organic full fat milk deliverd every week from a local organic dairy farm.
Many people will tell you that formula for toddlers is a complete marketing scam, and unless for medical reasons your baby cannot take cow milk there is no reason to do that.
Also, be brave and skip the bottle - go for a cup with a straw. Baby might be thirsty for a few days and cry, but then 'magic' they pick up the cup and drink, and it is great. We did this, then a few friends followed us and did the same, and it is soooooo worth it for your own ease and for baby's development too.
The first few days/weeks (I can't remember) we mixed the milk with water, as it was too strong a taste for him, but we gradually reduced the water and he was fine. I think it was about 7-10 days, can't really remember and every baby is different anyway.
We never give juice, only water and cows milk. The one exception was that after about 18 months if I had some 100% fresh grapefruit or orange juice he might take a sip or two from my glass. Now at 22 months he loves his milk and his water and will take one or two sips from my glass every now and again, but he has not aquired a taste for juice at all as we haven't exposed him to it.
Hppe that helps - good luck! And contratulations on one year of breast feeding!!!

Thanks crj! I just tried adding one ounce water to the cow's milk. He drank one ounce from his cup! It's already quite an achievement (no luck after trying for the past few days)!!!
Next, I'll get him a straw cup. Hopefully he drinks more out of it... any advice on straw cup? Which brand is good?

i think crj said it all, we pretty much went through the cow's milk introduction around the same stage if you look at past threads!
we use munchkin straw cups.

Thanks Starlionblue. For some reason the link you typed doesn't seem to exist any more...
Following up on this topic - Last night, I was out and wasn't able to nurse him before bed. First time we gave him cow's milk in a straw cup after bath. He didn't take any from it. After a lot of struggle, my helper switched it back to bottle. He drank much spitted it out. He just wouldn't take it. At the end he fell asleep with hardly any milk intake at all....
How did you wean this bed time feed? I always thought if this is replaced by a straw cup he won't get any comfort out of it. I still can't figure how this can be done without a battle. I started with the mid day one but after almost 2 weeks he still doesn't drink any. Shall I change another milk brand? Or simply he's not used to non-BM taste? It's a real headache!
