Read a thread about some that are lucky to have very big amount of housing allowance. This just makes me wonder how much is their income if they have housing allowance say around 50K-100K per month. Just curious.

when I lived in Hk 7 years ago our monthy salary was about 20% more than our rent. We now poised to move back, both salary and rent allowance have improved and our salary will be 35% more than our rent. I don't know what's normal but that is how it has worked for us.

As GreenValleys says, it all comes down to individual contracts and negotiations. At present, my partner's housing allowance is about HKD15,000 a month more than his salary. When we first arrived in HK his salary was far more than his accommodation allowance, but as rental rates have increased quite dramatically in recent years his company has factored these in to his compensation package. However, I'm sad to say, it hasn't also been giving him 30% salary increases every couple of years...

Thanks everyone for sharing the information. I always think if you have such big allowances, your income may be at least 3 or 5 times more than that.

Imagine 100K on housing and the salary is around 300K pm. Pheww.... I wish I can taste a little bit of that.

A lot of expats on large housing allowances actually have larger housing allowances than salaries. The reason is that they will not move countries unless they have similar accommodation to what they had back home. And that costs big dollars in a place like HK...

The expats on the big housing allowances AND the big salaries are usually those who earn big money for their companies - and work massive hours... Traders and investment bankers bring in millions and are paid accordingly (if they dont get paid big bucks, as pointed out, they will move companies).

However the work hours are horrendous... have a mate who works for one of these outfits and a group of us met for dinner at 9... he was on the phone almost constantly till 1am - and its common for him to have to be available for conference calls at 5am on Saturdays :(

Much better to be Ed - currently next to the pool in Bali (if you look close you can see me at the table http://www.jajaliluna.com/)

Guys that rake in the large housing allowances will generally not have that high salaries. It is made up in the discretionary bonus though which is sometimes the same as salary or most likely 2-5 times salary. I know a lot of expats that spend 100% of salary and only savings is from bonus.
