Damp/mouldy smell? Advice required...

Hi there


Advice needed. My fiance and I recently moved into a townhouse. We have a stairwell at the entrance of the house which smells damp and musty. This smell filters upwards the length of the stairwell and is pungent.


We have had the drains unblocked which eradicated a sewerage smell but the damp/mouldiness is still there. It smells like a really bad basement odour.


It seems to be strongest where the electrical box area is and then on one of the landing areas.


Would anyone have an idea as to what could be causing this problem? If pipes aren't been used could this smell occur? Or could it be electrical?


Opening the door, using dehumidifiers and room deodorisers don't work to eradicate it.


The agents/landlord are good at fixing things but it has been going on for a while and seems the only way to fix it is via a process of elimination. If anyone has any suggestions, or has been through this problem, it would be great to hear your thoughts.

hi Madxpat, sorry to hear about your odor troubles, I can definitely relate. I regret not being able to suggest a solution, because we have a stinky bathroom problem that doesn't seem to go away. We are curious too and sick of it. Ours is so strong that it's definitely an entity. Yours sounds very similar. I hope you find a way to vanquish it.
