Buying meat in HK

Hi all

I'm wondering how you all cope with buying "previously frozen" meat/fish in HK? I find it time consuming that I have to rush to the supermarket every 2 days to get meat as I can't re-freeze them at home! Would appreciate feedback from old timers in HK. Cheers x

you can buy just chilled meat not previously frozen - all supermarkets (well at least Park and Shop, Taste, Great, etc) have it. Also - you can buy frozen meat and store it in the freezer until you need it? Use some of the delivery companies such as South Stream or Tenderloin - you order online and they deliver - thinking of which I am pretty sure they have chilled meat at well as frozen.

Meatmarket has a mix of (vacuum-packed) chilled and frozen meats from Australia. Order online and free delivery to your door.

And there are always the wet markets for fresh meat.

Hi Idsllvn & Claire

Thanks for your replies. I was quite sure that Park N Shop and CitySuper's chickens are labelled US - previously frozen. I guess I need to look more closely. I am too chicken to buy meat from a wet market! Will have to check out South Stream and Meatmarket. Ta

yup southstream provides both frozen and fresh and when it gets to your door the frozen items are still frozen so you can keep storing until ready. I always get fresh and frozen for the week. Meats are abundant and range from organic to grainfed to choice cuts. Orgainic Tenderloin 2+ inches thick melt in your mouth. Organic sausage, chicken, pork, I'm a SSS addict! Cheers!

Hi Claire.

Can you give us the URL for Meatmarket, as when I tried "meatmarket.com" I got a porn site....grrrr

I tried google but came up with so many different sites.

you need to add .hk onto the end of that.

Also - it is not really a huge deal to re-freeze the previously frozen meat - so long as you don't keep it in the freezer for weeks on end. No harm done for short term freezing.

We Have been purchasing from a wonderful company called Porterhouse. They are not cheap but they have what I (and my hubby) consider the best steaks in HK. Think BIG THICK USA steaks.

Carol, is the meat from Porterhouse from the US? I've been looking for thick USDA rib eye steaks?

Leo's has US sourced Angus ribeye. Don't know which USDA grade it is but you can always call and ask. Note wholesale so you have to buy the whole piece which would solve your "thick steak" requirement. They do have some smaller cuts. http://www.leosfinefood.com.hk/meats/angus-beef-usa-cab.html

Porterhouse has USDA prime and Angus from the US. However prices are way higher than at Leo's.

Hi mochifan, yes porterhouse does US ribeye steaks, my husband's favorite! axpatguy38 is right, more expensive than Leo's but I read in a magazine that the steaks at porterhouse are the same as what is served at Mortons Steakhouse. I have had leo's but were dissapointed in the consistency.
