Hi

We have the standard fortress brand and they are beginning to smell a bit and look a bit dirty inside.

Does anyone know how to clean them?

Also, when are you supposed to run them?

Does having airconditioning cancel out the need for dehumidifiers??

be helpful to have nice smelling air in apartment - but then again this is Hong Kong!

We must keep careful watch of humidity because we have a grand piano. Our humidity monitor showed no change when we tried running only the A/C, so from that it would seem if you want to reduce humidity, you must run dehumidifiers. We have 8 that are on 365/24/7. An added (and completely unexpected) benefit has been a dramatic reduction in my family's asthma and allergy symptoms. Worth every penny!

As far as cleaning them, we have never had a problem with them smelling bad, so can't help with that. We just take out all the parts and soak them in antibacterial soap every few months, then use antibacterial soap to wipe down all the parts we can reach. Obviously, don't do this when it's plugged in and don't get water on the electronic bits. Maybe consider getting a replacement filter to help with the smell.

our dehumidifiers look very tricky and the manual has been misplaced so wonder if any of you know how to take them apart to get to the innard?. My helper has been great at taking the filters out and giving them a good clean. Have to say we keep them on all the time and our allergies are better.

I understand at some point, we'll need to humidify the air too as HK gets so dry. When does that phase start?
