The lack of breastfeeding rooms in public place leaves breastfeeding mothers with no choice but to nurse their babies in toilets. In view of this, the Hong Kong Breastfeeding Mothers’ Association is going to hold a campaign, namly the “Calling for Statutory Requirements on the Provision of Baby Care Facilities”, in the Charter Garden in Central on 1 December. Parents who are concerned about the issue of baby care room, baby carers who need to take babies out to public places and supporters are all invited to come on that day and co-sign a letter to the Government. The letter will be sent to the government calling for the statutory requirements for baby care rooms in public places and the setting of standards on the design and facilities of baby care rooms. Details of the campaign are as follows:

Date: 1 December 2007 (Saturday)

Time: 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Venue: Charter Garden, Central (Exit J2 of Central MTR Station)

Name of the campaign: “Calling for Statutory Requirements on the Provision of Baby Care Facilities”

Aim of the campaign: To call for

1) Statutory requirements on the provision of baby care rooms that are separated from toilets, assessable to both sexes, clean, tidy, not too small and include a separate breastfeeding cubicle; and

2) The setting of standards on the design and facilities of baby care rooms.

So that the needs of the babies and parents are catered for and babies don’t need to be fed in toilets anymore.

Details of the campaign: Apart from the co-signing activity, a sharing session, where experienced mothers will share their nursing experiences and techniques will also be held. Besides, government officials and Legco members are invited to listen to the requests of the babies and parents. They will also be invited to experience the difficulties parents have to face in using the public toilets for baby care purposes.

Block out the time slot in your diary and meet us on 1 December!

I second cara, I breastfed in public also (in Australia), and now with no. 2 on the way, I will definately not hesitate to do so again in public, regardless of which country, although will be discreet as possible. I cannot attend on Saturday, but if you start up a petition, I would be happy to sign. I refuse to breastfeed my baby in a toilet!

Perhaps you could setup a digital petition for us to register on line. There would be alot of us who are supportive, but unable to attend I'm sure.

As a breastfeeding mama I think any sort of call for action to support breastfeeding women is fantastic. I do agree with the above posters however - what should be called for is the right of women to breastfeed in public without discrimination enshrined in law (if it is not already). When it comes to feeding your baby there should be nothing to stop you doing it where-ever you happen to be. The more women that stand up for their rights by doing so, the better. Breastfeeding is not shameful, it's beautiful.

I'm agree with katiefran, I don't care if I have to breastfeed in the public and I don't care what other people's look. Me and my baby have the right to breastfeed.

But I know there are so many Chinese moms are afaird to breastfeed in the public and they do think it's shameful, that's sad for a beautiful thing.
