Hey Ed,

It appears you know quite a bit about BKK. Can you recommend a hotel (nice one) to stay at or any deals currently in place for AsiaXPAT members. Also some good restaurants, massage etc.

Just pulled into BKK this week and am finding there are no deals to be had - in fact many of the hotels are completely full...

Check out the Ascott on Sathorn - they have a deal on their site for a studio for about USD100 http://www.the-ascott.com/thailand/bangkok/ascott_bangkok_sathorn.html

Alternatively search http://www.asiarooms.com/

Thanks Ed, Dec 3-6 is my window. Thinking Marriot spa or downtown BKK which do you prefer?

Never stayed at the downtown location - peaceful on the river though...

Just across the road (cross over and walk left about 100 yards) from the Ascott Sathorn is a 'massage' centre called "The Health...." Great massages in an upmarket location used by the wealthy locals. You will need to book at the weekends, but it is well worth it. They have double rooms, or family rooms, plus all the usual packages. Prices are very reasonable with a 'double massage' costing around 900 baht. My husband and I use it when in BKK - by far the best in town.

Marriot Spa is great, but much more expensive.

We stay at both - Ascott for doing stuff around town - we stay in the two bedroomed apartments as we have kids - great for us - pool is ok, plus the Italian restaurant is good and the sala’s by the pool are excellent for a romantic dinner. However, the Ascott is functional rather than a fully serviced resort hotel, which the Marriot Sap and Resort is. If you do not mind the 15 minute boat journey, which is very pleasant and scenic to catch the subway into town, then the Marriot is a great choice. Marriot has a number of good restaurants on the premises, the spa is very good – b/fast excellent and is in my opinion the best value for money hotel in BKK.

I suspect from your post you are unfamiliar with BKK.

From the Marriot Spa, traveling takes time – boat, train, etc, but is a great place to relax, combined with a bit of shopping/tourism.

If you want to see more of BKK then you would be better staying in town close to a train station. If shopping is your thing, then stay close to Siam Square (Siam Novetel, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Grand Hyatt, Marriot Mayfair are a few possibilities depending on your budget).

Shangrila, Oriental or The Peninsula are also all great places to stay.

BKK has so many possibilities – Marriot is a good choice.

Read this article for some more exotic locations.

Shifted into Ascott today - huge 1 bedroom apt (must be 1200 sq ft) - great pool and gym. Highly recommend this... I'm in till next Sunday on a rate of just over HKD1000/night... check with them about their special offer at the moment for Amex card holders...

you boys sure know how to live it up!! I am happy with a small guesthouse called orchid place for 750-800 baht a night. Nice big TV with decent english channels, and the place is clean and newly refurbed!! Its just along from the Grand Sofitel (or whatever it is called) on soi 6 Sukhumvit- not that you boys will be going there :) I just can't bare spending 2000 baht or 4000 baht for a room i am rarely in! Anyway, every man for him self ey!

I'd work out where you want to go and narrow the options down. Not sure you'd want to stay just anywhere - ease of access for the BTS would probably be worth having. Downtown taxis can take a long time to get anywhere.

We now always stay in the Sukhumvit area (popular with lots of expats and tourists), around Soi 11 (President Solitaire is OK, large rooms, small kitchen area, relatively cheap, small pool but not generally v crowded; Sheraton much nicer but a regular 5* hotel), but that's because in the evenings we like sitting in an outdoors bar, having cheap eats, mooching along a night market and having a cheap massage. Good access to BTS and therefore high-end shopping and the many river sights during the day. Streets are not really kiddy stroller friendly (no idea if 3 years olds need such things), though. If you want to do a lot of the sights and are more likely to eat in the hotel then I'd go for a location near the river. The Shangri La is nice, well located and has a good pool. The Marriot Resort & Spa is also on the river but a ways down (as described above). This has a better pool and is better if you reckon on spending more time in the hotel. Many others, of course. Pick your area and then use Asiarooms/Trip advisor/or this site to fine tune.

Hi Dive Bum, your advice is great our 3 yr old is a rare beast that enjoys walking so not stroller friendly is just fine.

We like you would prefer "local" and a little mooching.

We are considering Centrepoint Sukhumvit, Fraser Sukhumvit or Somerset Lake Apartments, these seem like a great option - have you seen or stayed at any of these?

Thanks for all your info, much appreciated.

Hi TNZ. I've not stayed at any of these but have had a quick look at their locations. Centrepoint looks to be very close to the Sheraton (where we normally stay). So, pretty close to Asok BTS and the nice mooch from Asok down to Nana and Soi 11 (more intersting in the evening when night market open). Fraser looks very close to President Solitaire (where we used to stay). It's a good 10 minute walk from here to Nana BTS along Soi 11, but an interesting one (they may also have a golf cart to chauffeur you). Pavements have generally wibbly wobbly paving stones and mysterious puddles, lots of interesting foodstuffs being cooked, restaurants, massage parlours etc. The deep-fried insect seller makes regular visits to Soi 11 and the Tuk Tuk cocktail bar is generally parked at the Fraser end, close to the Bed Supper Club - excellent cocktails, definitely worth a visit. Cheap Charlies is halfway along in a narrow sidestreet and sells cheap beer etc. Very nice to pause en route back to the apt. Suk 11 does pretty good Thai food but I think the Railway restaurant does better and has a big beer garden with live jazz. The German restaurant does very hearty courses with excellent potato salad. Everything we go to happens to be on the left side of the road (as you walk towards the Fraser). Soi 11 is my favorite place in BKK (apart from perhaps the Paragon Cinema - Nokia Screens - way better than anything HK has to offer including the new deluxe screen in Elements). Somerset looks a bit further down from Centrepoint and the walk to Asok may be a drag. Hope this helps!
