PETROL PRICE...YOWZA!

ORIGINAL POST

Wow! I just got a car and drove my first tank of gas. The petrol prices advertised at the local pump say $8.45 per liter, which seems reasonable and is what I based my budget upon. But the receipt shows a 'duty' of an additional $6.06 per liter, making a pump price of $14.51 per liter!!

Holy smokes...that's expensive gas!

Some online research shows me that gas stations offer 'petrol cards' that enable you to get a discount...wikipedia calls it a 'significant discount', but my local Shell says they only save you $0.50 per liter, which is quite insignificant when faced with a pump price of almost $15.

What can people tell me about petrol prices....are there any stations that are cheaper, or are there any 'petrol card' schemes that provide the alleged 'significant discount'?

Thanks, from me and my wallet.

Hi all, can any of you help me out with this? I'm planning to buy a Toyota Corolla and would like to know how much it is to maintain it? Could you give me a ballpark figures for the followings? If you think there should be more to add to the list, please let me know. Thanks! I just received my driver's licence, by the way.

1) Insurance

2) Maintenance

3) Gas (I'll be a leisure, Saturday/Sunday driver.)

4) License fee (for below 1,500 cc)

5) Parking (I think it's around $2,000 per month in my estate)

6) What else?

Thank you!

In-town parking, tunnel fees, parking tickets. It costs about $20 per hour to park anywhere away from home, the Aberdeen tunnes is only $5, but the Kowloon tunnels are about $30. I drove my wife to the airport last week just for the ride, and discovered that the Airport Express is a LOT cheaper! The tunnel fees, bridge fee, parking fee and gas I used up was closer to $200 for that one ride.

driving is safer than taxis and buses if you have a little one - ever tried getting a car seat into a HK taxi? Also, always having to fold a stroller in a bus means your child on your lap and that is not a safe way to travel especially on the windy roads on the southside. There is a promotion at the moment if you pay with HSBC card at Caltex, you get a bit off your petrol. I like the sound of the CALTEX card. Do you just ask for an application form at the pump?
