Dear all,

I've just received the best news, I've been accepted into a Masters TEFL programme UPON completion of a satisfactory essay.

Being out of university for awhile and not knowing much about where to find scholarly articles/books I need your help.

Is there an online website where I can go to get educational articles? Can I borrow books from the local universities even if I'm not a student or alumnus?

I require the following books:

Reading list for Qualifying Essays for the MA TESOL

The list below should be viewed as a good starting point to explore some of the issues which you are asked to address in the Qualifying Essays. Use them as a stimulus and to provide you with ideas for additional reading.

Ellis, R. 1997. Second Language Acquisition. OUP

Ellis, R. 2003. Task-based Language Learning and Teaching. Oxford: OUP

Hedge, T. 2000. Teaching and Learning in the Language Classroom. Oxford: OUP

Lightbown, P. and Spada, N. 1999. How languages are learned. 2nd edition. Oxford: OUP

Mitchell, R. and Myles, F. 2004. Second language learning theories. Second Edition. London: Arnold

Richards, J. and T. Rodgers. 2001. Approaches and methods in language teaching. 2nd edition. Cambridge: CUP

Williams, M. and R. Burden, R. 1997. Psychology for language teachers. Cambridge: CUP

Thank you!

Although you've been out of Uni for awhile, surely there were public libraries back then? I put the titles of four (random) books into the HK public library search and all four were listed. Why don't you give it a go? You can make a reservation online and pick them up at your nearest library. Public libraries in HK are free of charge.

You can also borrow from local universities but it will cost you. According to the HKU website, it's $3,000 p.a. for borrowing privileges.

If it's articles you want, get on to Proquest, or similar. This used to be available offsite through the public library but now I believe is only available onsite. Check the HKPL website. The library staff are quite helpful and will be able to assist you with electronics resources.

BTW, I recall there's a limit of 6 books per person to borrow from HKPL, but get another family member to get a card and borrow on theirs if you need to borrow more. And you can renew the books online, unless overdue or reserved by another.
